  1. TONGS! They aren't perfect, a little ugly, but I'm really happy with them for a first project. Advice and critique appreciated! Thanks all!
  2. I just picked up a bunch of old files and rasps. I heard that some are actually worth money and should not be forged. Any truth to this? If so, what should I look out for? Thanks!
  3. I think I'm going with a gas forge. I've got an old CO2 tank cut up as a forge body already and I just need to put together a burner. I have three propane tanks for other stuff so I'm good there.
  4. On the way out saw a guy selling firewood. Bought a pecan stump for 10$ all in all successful day.
  5. Auction report: Anvil sold for 500$ Forge sold for about 250 I did not buy either of those. I brought 2 boxes of rasps and files for 60( after auctioneer commission) I bought an 80lb anvil from aljeter (the mystery star one he posted about) for 100
  6. Where near Austin? I think I've seen your craigslist ads
  7. Also out of ignorance, what would being in a fire do to the anvil? Edit: got answer in chat. Disregard.
  8. I'm heading to an estate sale/auction this Saturday, they have an 100lb Soderfors Anvil and a coal forge for sale. As a noobie to this whole blacksmithing thing, what is a reasonable bid/limit? I know a lot of it boils down to "how much are you willing to spend" but I'm more talking value. Pictures are attached. Thanks!
  9. I put up a Craiglist ad looking for anvils about a month ago and was contacted by a woman a few hours away with a Swedish anvil. I've attached the pictures I've recieved. Can you guys help me with identifying this anvil and approximately what it is worth? I haven't recieved an asking price yet but if its a decent anvil I want to go into the haggling with as much information as possible. Thanks!
  10. Howdy! My name is Joel, I'm 24, and completely new to blacksmithing. I'm currently stationed at Ft Hood, Texas and I've been interested in smithing for a while. I've been lurking the forums for a few weeks and (with the wife's blessing), I'm ready to finally take the plunge into smithing! Any smiths in the Fort Hood area that could point me in the right direction and/or give some guidance. Also I'm looking for any anvils in the area. Thanks! -Joel
