  1. It's a gorgeous specimen, I'd buy it just to oogle over it...
  2. I felt like it... called the guy up 5 minutes after he posted it... Turns out it was an old high school acquaintance, and I told him that I'd give him his full asking price... He said "consider it yours, see you at 5" I took a screen shot of the listing, just in case I had to prove how lucky I truly was, and that I in fact didn't steal it....lol
  3. That's quite a collection of forming stakes... Very cool find to say the least, especially that tooling base!!! I think I'm in love....
  4. http://www.iforgeiron.com/topic/23169-a-5-lb-fisher-anvil/ - Other thread that I'm talking about.... Driving Logic: Horrible pics are to my advantage, because it matches up with the above thread's anvil look and hardy dimensions, except for that god awful top plate, as it's quite proud and pronounced... Then there's that little bulge in the heel, which coincides with the above thread, as well as that old Fisher I recently acquired. Then the horn has what seems to be a clear linear division, just like both my Fishies, there's even a dimpling void in the horn, from both sideviews left and right... Not arguing your expertise as you're "The Man" when it comes to Fisher Anvils, just pointing out my impulsive reasonings as to why I thought it to be one. Hopefully I'm looking for the right characteristics??? .. The fact that it's not a Fisher makes me feel better about it.... Also that little heel bulge sticks out
  5. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=181072816749 Well congrats to this lady/gentleman... Consider this thread and the other mentioning these small fishers; "They stole this one.."
  6. The looming idea that many accomplished Blacksmiths don't like the taste of is; "Blacksmith" and the way that it's defined doesn't encompass any prerequisite for schooling, experience, standard of work... It's understandable to get tossed up about it on the internet, because there's no real discernable pecking order, and the guy that's been doing it for months can hash it out with someone thats quite established and accomplished in the trade... It's called the internet/reality equilibrium; there should be no shortage of salt... I enjoy xxxxxxx both off by calling myself an artist, and referring to the craft as an Art...
  7. I'm assuming its the one I posted in the first come, first served section... If so you're looking at 205 lbs... at least thats what I see from the pics... Nice score. you beat me to it...
  8. First step in becoming "Pele" is attaining a grapefruit... stumble over it, kick it, follow it's erratic wobble down the dirt road... Love every second of it... then light a cigarette with the grapefruit... get it on video.... post it on youtube... Pele Who??? B)
  9. 350 pound William Foster??? That's fairly large considering the majority that I've seen are 200 or less...
  10. Anvilfire's rebound test of an 8" thick granite plate @ 85% rebound... By my experience, testing out a 220 lb. cast iron ASO with a 1" chrome ball bearing dropped from 12 inches... I got an inch return... I'd rather learn how to crochet frog hairs than work steel on an ASO. If it's the only thing you have, I would still suggest you work on something else... like another hammer (sledge)... You will notice the difference instantly.
  11. Touch'e... I forgot about you yankees and your cold weather... Wish you guys would keep it up there, because these 50 degree mornings are killing me!!!
  12. You're a Blacksmith when.... - you don't have the time to post dissertations about what it takes to be a Blacksmith, because you're too busy working the medium.... :D ZZZZZZIIIIIIIIIIIIIINNNNNGGGGG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! J/K guys... carry on... ;)
  13. This wasn't by chance a purchase made off the Pensacola craigslist, because just last week I spoke with a woman on a 170# hay budden that was clearly marked 20(5?)... Location and pics help out greatly $375 for a #170 budden is a great deal, if it is in fact 200+ good on you for wheeling and dealing...
  14. It's about to break the $870 mark... And it's got 1 day and 22 hours... Hope someone likes Crow...
  15. if your going for solid just get a ball bearing or a shot put ball.
  16. Thanks to your good vibes... I'm probably going to be gone from the forum for quite awhile... Hope ya'll will understand...
  17. Ebay link removed. ^ Link The modifications to that anvil look like they each serve a specific function... You've even annotated that in your postings... GLWS, and I like the mods...
  18. My spoils of war today... #12 Rigid Peddinghaus 125kg/275lbs- $650 This thing hadn't been touched with a hammer... the face cleaned up...
  19. Just to further validate the legitimacy of this method... I"ll tell you my story... 4 months of searching FL for that elusive anvil... nothing...Joined IFI, within the first week, I made my first RR track anvil, still searching but not finding, started working on my DIY forklift tine anvil... Then I came across this thread... Yeah... Then it all changed... I was so hungry for a real anvil it hurt... I told everyone and the sister I never had about me wanting an anvil, even cold called guys that were selling non-anvil items... I went into two local machine shops, asked them... relentlessly pursuing... Then I found one 110 pounds and bought a tiny one to caress a deal for both... it wasn't as large as I had wanted it to be, but it sufficed for a month until, I found another 2 weeks later that weighed 155 pounds... I told myself that if the right deal came along for the 250+ pound anvil I was seeking for a real shop anvil, I'd have two anvils to sell or trade to cover the cost of the monster... Whatever, I'll beat the hot stuff till it comes along... days later I found an ad for a 150 pound anvil @ $1 a pound, not to include the wiggle room... It was a fisher, so I gladly jumped in on that, ended up being a really neat 100 lb. civil war era fisher... Then this morning I got a lead on a peddinghaus #12 #275 Rigid anvil, priced at $650... So granted I have taken TPAAAT head on with a pretty sizable budget (thats what 6 months of searching and not finding anything will do to you), and acquired more smaller anvils to trade/flip up to a larger one... I reached my ultimate goal in attaining one large shop anvil and one demo anvil... and having three extra anvils to flip, making up for the investment... I present to you what you can accomplish in a little over a month (12/18/12 to 1/30/13) using the TPAAAT method in a rather anvil-dry state. From left to right #110 FISHER and #20 semi-steel bench anvil- $200 ($1.53/ lb) #275 Peddinghaus- $650 ($2.36/ lb) #100 FISHER- $125 ($1.25/ lb) #155 Early English- $250 ($1.61/ lb) Now I have to thin the heard to recoup costs... which shouldn't be too difficult... Was I lucky???... for the first time in ages I'd like to think so...... More importantly I used this methodology, and came out on top. Thanks Glenn for this thread, and thank you Thomas Powers for being an enigmatic, persistent, and consistent genius!!! - P3
  20. Things got some meat on it... I'd hit it... :D and yeah... WAY better than the RR track... Wire brush it if you want to pretty it up, and attempt to find the maker... A great many on here swear by the heat and beat- till it's pretty approach...
  21. Gibbs penetrant. Use it as is and it does awesome in rust prevention/reversal.... Or, when it dries you can paint over it!
