March 28, 20251 yr Big 10-4. L-R: 200#, 55#, 124# The cylinders were right at $2 a pound!! the plate more reasonable at .70$ Tubes and angle irons were 110# at .90$. Adds up fast…
March 30, 20251 yr Both of these beauties have followed me home. Still mulling over ideas for them. Make a table out of the big gear? I know I recently posted about the wheels. I am thinking of making a wheelbarrow or rolling cart out of the wheels.
March 30, 20251 yr The gear would make a cool table or base for a pole lamp or similar. Still no ideas for the casters other than maybe a cart. Frosty The Lucky.
March 30, 20251 yr The springs on the wheels might be good stock for something requiring a degree of toughness.
March 30, 20251 yr Casters would look cool under an outdoor kitchen or something like that. A bit of an industrial vibe.
April 3, 20251 yr Nice FB Marketplace find: within certification dates, one empty, one full. (The “Sold” was me; the seller got a couple of dozen messages after mine but before I could pick them up, so he marked them as “Sold” just to get some peace,)
April 3, 20251 yr Thanks for the ideas on that gear and wheels everyone! I also recently thought about how one could use the wheels, or wheels like it for a torch cart.
April 4, 20251 yr Oooh, 25% better! It's happy dance time! It should say on the tank label, in gallons of course. Frosty The Lucky.
April 4, 20251 yr Great deal on the tanks John. Will, that's a beautiful old gear, perhaps a coat/hat stand. Would be a great base for about anything really. I can also see it as a lamp with one or two old industrial looking lights on it.
April 4, 20251 yr 8 hours ago, Frosty said: It should say on the tank label, in gallons of course. It's actually marked in pounds of water: "WC 95.2#", which confirms that it's a 40 lb/10 gallon tank (the actual volume is 11.4 gallons, but the extra allows for expansion and contraction).
April 5, 20251 yr Super score! How do you have them filled? My delivery company wont fill bottles but maybe big ones like that they would. Imagine they weigh quite a bit when full
April 5, 20251 yr I take them to my local Tractor Supply Company. They weigh about 70–75 pounds full (liquid propane is about half the density of water), so they’re not too heavy to lift in and out of the back of my vehicle.
April 5, 20251 yr Here Suburban Propane exchanges and loads tanks for you. It helps make sure out of spec tanks are disposed of and filled ones are all inspected and tested. They don't fill RV and other mounted tanks at their main location. They do have a number of affiliates that are set up to fill off a gauge rather than a scale. Frosty The Lucky.
April 6, 20251 yr On 3/23/2025 at 7:20 PM, Frosty said: You might be lucky, not that I'm wishing ill for the person who got it. I'm not sure if a welding supply will fill a bottle that's been through a fire. Heck, I bet they'll exchange it if for no other reason than to take it out of circulation till it can be tested. Serious bummer about the fire, I hope no livestock were lost. Fire seems to be a pretty common fate for barns. Frosty The Lucky. My plan for it was a dishing form, and mabe a bell..
April 6, 20251 yr Oxy bottles make wicked LOUD bells once you cut the bottom off and make a dishing form. Speaking of oxy bottle bells, how close are your neighbors? When an old friend of mine Clyde Wynia owner of "Jurustic Park" in Marshfield Wi. started damping his oxy bottle wind chimes, bells, birds, etc. for the neighbors. The closest is about 1/4 mile but a number of them mentioned them in Church, the market, etc. Standing near one and pulling the cord was probably dangerously, definitely painfully loud. Clyde used to wear ear plugs on windy days and lent me a pair when I visited. If you want to see some awesome junkyard art Jurustic Park hits in a search. Frosty The Lucky.
April 9, 20251 yr I was finally able to bring home the map drawers that I saved from our school's art department's old building. You can see how the mess ends where the map drawers begin I've started with commonly used punches, chisels, etc in the top drawer because this is about 2-3 steps away from my anvil (just outside the roller door at the left of the photo). Thanks for looking! Jono.
April 10, 20251 yr A visit to a used bookstore in western Connecticut yielded three books on armor for the metalworking library: As well as gifts for my mother (who grew up in Sitka) and a friend (whom I had just told last week about the Macaulay book) and some serious literature for me: I got all six books for $35 plus tax. It’s always a good sign when the name of a bookshop includes the words “book barn“.
April 11, 20251 yr Sweet scores John! I loved Sitka, it's a great little city. I don't know why but every time I think of Sitka the voices start talking about Ray Troll T shirts and Ray's shop is in Ketchikan, up one of those crazy narrow twisty side streets, perched over a narrow canal. If you ever get a chance, old town Ketchikan is wicked cool old timey (what're codes, something to eat?) weird. Heck South East is probably one of the neatest places on Earth, it's just silly expensive to get anywhere. Frosty The Lucky.
April 12, 20251 yr And these were waiting for me when I got back to Ohio: (along with replacement cushions for my CPAP mask, thank heaven.)
April 12, 20251 yr You know John, you should forge yourself a BIG fancy bibliofile cabinet. Frosty The Lucky.
April 15, 20251 yr Also brought home a few things from the ReStore: And a fresh tetanus shot from the doctor:
April 15, 20251 yr A tetanus shot John? They don't wear out you know or did you encounter a rabid mutant gerbil at the ReStore? I'd like to find a deal on a deadbolt lock set but we need to replace the front door first. <sigh> A boy can never have too many Vicegrips and a big hammer is always good to keep handy for electrical problems. Frosty The Lucky.
