ThomasPowers Posted February 26, 2020 Posted February 26, 2020 The CDC has put out an infographic on Facial Hairstyles and Filtering Facepiece Respirators https://www.cdc.gov/niosh/npptl/pdfs/FacialHairWmask11282017-508.pdf All the "Dwarven look" styles are banned; they don't even show any braided beards! BillyBones Posted February 20, 2021 Posted February 20, 2021 When i was in the ME one of the guys there asked why i shaved everyday. Some of the guys went a couple days without, you know lax regs and all. My response was a gas mask does not seal over a beard. Quote
Frosty Posted March 1, 2021 Posted March 1, 2021 I've been shaving since the pandemic started getting serious. I'll go a couple days but it only takes me a couple minutes to shave before going out. I've discovered I like Harry's shaver and blades. I'd have just used my old Bic but good luck finding something that doesn't have more blades than I have ear hairs. Frosty The Lucky. Quote
Deimos Posted March 1, 2021 Posted March 1, 2021 I have stopped shaving since my wife told me I look dashing with a full beard, rather have a ill fitting mask then a disappointed wife. Quote
Frosty Posted March 1, 2021 Posted March 1, 2021 So is Dashing how your wife says, hide more of your face . . . Please? Deb prefers me in a beard too and when I shaved for the first time in years I discovered I'd developed jowls and a dewlap! No wonder I couldn't trim my beard evenly under my chin! Our vaccines should be up to strength in a couple weeks and I can lose the razor. Frosty The Lucky. Quote
ThomasPowers Posted March 1, 2021 Author Posted March 1, 2021 There was a phrase from an Irish song..."He's been hiding from his razor"... Wasn't it nice to know that your "Moose Look" is getting a boost? Quote
Deimos Posted March 1, 2021 Posted March 1, 2021 I think I will need to have a long conversation my wife about that. Quote
Scott NC Posted March 1, 2021 Posted March 1, 2021 I have not touched a razor since I got a wahl clippers for pandemic haircuts. They work on whiskers too. I just let it go until the itchiness gets to be too much. I also learned, as with everything else, there is quite the learning curve to cutting your own hair. Quote
JHCC Posted March 1, 2021 Posted March 1, 2021 I recently switched to Resp-O-Rator, which is based on a mouthpiece that you hold in your teeth rather than a mask that fits over your face. I like it a lot, and even though I am currently cleanshaven, I can see how it would work much better for a bearded smith. Here is my review: Quote
BartW Posted March 1, 2021 Posted March 1, 2021 I 'm still using the diving mask; essentially to not ruin new glasses with sparks: and the old are still in the mask. I'm fairly stubby as I hate shaving. Been trying to get a hold of one of those resp-o-rators JHCC, but they aren't for sale in europe... probably some idiotic law around PPE. Quote

Deimos Posted March 1, 2021 Posted March 1, 2021 I really want those fancy 3M masks "3M™ Versaflo™ Respiratory Faceshield Assembly M-207" but they are a little bit expensive. Quote
twigg Posted March 1, 2021 Posted March 1, 2021 Nodebt, I've been cutting my hair and my partner's hair. Talk about pressure The haircutting isn't nearly as bad as the cleanup. Takes me over an hour to de-hair all surfaces. Quote
ThomasPowers Posted March 1, 2021 Author Posted March 1, 2021 My wife has been cutting my hair and trimming my beard for 35 years; she, however goes to the beautician. So no change for me this last year... Quote

I buzz my head with my Wahl's and when I'm hiding the jowls and dewlap use a guard on the beard. I buzz my head nekkid with a largish construction paper shield over the sink to keep the hair out. I fold it and flush the hair and hit the shower to dehair myself. If I have anything I'm going to put on in the bathroom as the same time I itch till I change. Frosty The Lucky. Quote

BillyBones Posted March 7, 2021 Posted March 7, 2021 My last hair cut was 25 years ago. When i got out of the Army i had a guy absolutely butcher my hair and i swore i would never get another hair cut, and i havent. Quote
Scott NC Posted March 7, 2021 Posted March 7, 2021 I too was in the service and I got stuck on high and tights. Ease of maintenance... Although when I cut it, it looks like somebody dragged a chia head through a cactus patch. I wear a ball cap a lot these days! Quote
Dax Hewitt Posted September 3, 2021 Posted September 3, 2021 I use the JSP infinity. Filters, fan and battery built in to the helmet with a grinding rated face shield. Not strictly rated for my level of facial hair but it works. Not cheap though, £800 each but definitely the best I have used. I got myself one to try and was that impressed I got 6 more for my service engineers. Quote
Frosty Posted September 4, 2021 Posted September 4, 2021 If you folded your beard up to cover more of your face it'd be an improvement. It looks like an excellent piece of PPE. Having the air supplied by fan through the filters makes a HUGE difference. Smart buy, I heartily approve. Frosty The Lucky. Quote
ThomasPowers Posted September 7, 2021 Author Posted September 7, 2021 My wife has started talking about braiding mine again, says it's tickling her face when I cuddle with her. I'd like to grow it out more for Christmas but she controls the scissors... Quote

ThomasPowers Posted September 10, 2021 Author Posted September 10, 2021 You could always braid it with slow match and call yourself "Blacksmith Beard" the pirate! Quote
