Hello all.  I hope the spring is treating you all well.

It's been a while since I've been online, but that's allowed me a bit of time in the shop.  Here's some of my recent completions.  Like the title says, comments and critiques are always welcome.

I really like the first third and fourth a lot. The fifth is nice as well. That's as far as overall.

What do I know lol.

Nice work.

Okay, wow! I'm clearly unable to critique 'cause I like them too much. two questions though: What's the handle material of the boning knife? And Those cheese knives, are those pattern welded blades or laminated? I love that pattern!

Thanks and bests to you!

Gergely

They're all beautiful blades but it's your handles I find myself looking at, great choice of materials and finish, nicely done.

All the handles are spalted big leaf maple from my property stabilized by K&G. Well, there's some ebony on a few as well.  The boning knife is an outer piece of a burl that another maker and I made a form and he cast some blue acraglass(? I think that's what it's called.  basically the stuff that bowling balls are made of) to make a block.  M54Nkvc.jpg

Regarding the cheese knives, you're correct, they are laminated/3 layers (a piece of O1 with a piece of 15N20 on each side.)

Nice work. I love the way the blue resin on the oner handle looks like a fish. Not so much the other side. Too bad.  I would love to see some WIP picks of your damascus and feather patterns.

Wow all very nice.  Did you make the sheath as well ?  Also ++ on the dog paws and 3 layer.

Billy-O,

You informed us that the handle;s wood is spalted big leaf maple.

Is the wood,  that you used,  cut from a burl?

The last pic,  that you posted,  sure looks like it.

Incidentally,  the knives are spectacular.  Beautiful job.

SLAG.

Nice work, BillO. You should be very proud of them!

Thanks Dave!

BTW - are you a member of the NWBA? If so, have we met at any of the conferences?

The only thing I can see to even be nit-picky about (and this is probably getting really nit-picky), is that I see a couple wire edges left on the sharpened edges. I shave with straight razors, so the sight of those make me cringe a little, but other than that they look spectacular.

billyO, I was just watching a YouTube video last night of the making of some tactical knives with the same kind of dog-paw pins. Were those yours?

Nope, I made those myself.  Pretty easy to do.

Yep, A couple/few years ago I cut down a maple on my property, mainly for firewood and saw all the spalting.  I did choose that tree because of the root burl.  I've got another one a bit further back on my property with a 3' dia burl that I'm thinking about being my firewood tree this year.  I just need to find an easier way than manual labor to get the wood up to the house.

Thanks for the compliments all.

Fantastic work - it's been great watching your blades progress.

Your patterns are becoming cleaner and better defined. The handles look solid and comfy, plus the material is just tons of fun.

My only critique is to find a balance between your lines. Your knives tend to be lean towards roundness or edges; soft or hard. Your first knife strikes the best balance in my opinion. :)
