Hydraulic press

Hydraulic press

hi all i'm thinking about building an  hydraulic press  I was thinking about using a 5 inch hydraulic cylinder but I seem to be having problems finding one in the UK does anyone know where to get one in the UK like they fit on most of the Usa 5x8x2 cheers

do you have a suitable power pack?

that is often harder to get and then get a cylinder to suit.

for forging you want speed more than pressure because as soon as the tool touches the work it get hot fast and the work gets cold fast so you need to work out the best size from the flow / pressure of your power pack.

if working with metal cold rather than hot then you need pressure more than speed

No I've got nothing yet just trying to put a parts list together at the moment ? I was thinking get the cylinder first and build the framework

then sort the hydrolics to match

I was  thinking something like this

thats ok if buying new but a lot of people dont have a grand for a powerpack and it depends a lot on what you want to do with your press.

how much experience do you have in design and construction, do you have 3 phase and if not you are limited to motor size

I need one to drift  hammers I would try to buy new  for the   Power pack if I can  ? I have been  building things all my life

i have just built this tyre hammer it  turned out well it works a lot better than I thought it would very controllable very happy with it

No 3 phase

have just had a quick look and seen several new 120mm bore and 140mm bore cylinders on sale but for a reasonable speed and to use them near the working pressure you will need a large powerpack. will pm you a link to one if you want then same seller has lots of other sizes too

Just got this cylinder off eBay 5 x8x2 should do the job ? £140 IMG_0168.thumb.JPG.f04456c4780f41c20901d25fa5c8a2e5.JPG

Are you a certified welder or at least experienced making welds that have to undergo SEVERE strains? A weld breaking on a hydraulic press is like having a bomb go off in your face.

Not a certified welder but I can weld I build norton bike frames for a living,  I know it has to be stronger than a bike frame I'll manage ok cheers.

Mmmm Motor bike frames Though they would be better if they were dirt bike frames LOL just kidding I am going to be building  a yamaha HL 500 frame soon Im making a replica those frames look good Cheers Beaver

Nice one Let’s have a look when you’ve done it cheers

That cylinder should do the job - coupled with the right motor, pump and valve. Very similar to the cylinder on my press.

Wow! Those bike frames are stunning! Big in to my bikes. Looking forward to your press build. If its anything like that hammer you built, it will be stunning.

That cylinder is a good start.

Thanks I just got the steel and all the   Templates have gone off to the laser should  get them back in five days so should be starting the build next week with any look cheers

I can breath a little easier now Kev. If you don't do heavy welding I'd recommend reading up on it, you obviously run good beads so it's just adapting technique. I look forward to your work in progress pics and seeing it in action.

I can weld thicker steel, take a look 2 -1/2" to 1”

Very striking!

Well ive started my build 8”x5” h girders still waiting for the laser cutting should have all the main welding done today

i think I’ll do three welds on all the 20mm parts that should hold it together

It Will add a 20 mm top plate and underneath the top H girder there will be a 60mm striking anvil block should be very strong

Its the only way to go Beaver when i weld mine ill be goin over it with stick 7018 a1 with a little preheat just enough to sweat out the moisture.

The Low hydrogen rod run correctly would be just as effective and alot faster as the tig weld but thats up to you, The mosture that you see when preheating is just water condensing from the flame fuel gas hydrocarbons burning and turned into water and Co2
