are we talking sledges or forging hammers? i have a 10# plumb cross pein sledge, and as far as forging hammers go i have a 5.9# hand forged rounding hammer. Basically a lump of steel on a stick that i use to punch and drift hammer stock when i have no striker.

Nan il has a 30# single handle sledg, personally my largest is 14#, but 6,8 and 10# sledges are also at hand, so are 1 1/2, 2,3,4&6 pound hand hammers

I married my wife for her 17# crosspeen; but the local store back there carried new ones to 20# and some old CCC folks claimed they used 32# ones to break rocks. (2 different groups located in different parts of the country making the claim a bit more believable)

I also have used a large one to break stone, if you run a vein or fracture you can make square blocks of stone ( barn stone).

Well I have a 25# sledge use it often to straighten stuff out or loosen something up

anything past 25# & I am looking for someone else to swing it !!!:o

PS -- it never lets me down it will either fix it or destroy it

Just made this 13lbs. sledge over at a buddies shop. He has a coal Iron Works forging press, and all the proper tooling to work this much steel. Made short work of it. 1681151559643.thumb.jpg.b72ee5bac5e6e2ab9ce9305a366af186.jpg

Thanks Frosty. I can't wait to make some hammers with thus beast.

I'll bet. I'd like to take a lash at that forging press myself.

Frosty.

It's a great tool for sure, I have used the Coal Iron Works press a few times now, for Making hammers and some hand fuller, and this sledge. The press is a little intimidating for sure, I feel more comfortable on his powerhammer than using the press. But that thing moves some material with ease. It's amazing.

I've used and like power hammers but haven't tried a forging press let alone a serious one. I'd love to take a lash at that one. Maybe one of these days when Deb and I are snow birding and visiting her older son in Ore. Then again we both have a list of people to meet, I'm sure someone on my list has a forging press and or  hopefully a forge roll.

Frosty The Lucky.

The forging press is pretty amazing.

After running the 18 ton press, a few days I am seriously considering selling my car for one of the bench top 12 ton forging presses. My shop is not much bigger than a large shipping container, so floor space is limited. But  what an arm saver.

Here is mine sitting on my 120lb + Fisher anvil. It makes the anvil look tiny.

Just got that one in a box of hammers at an auction. Working from smallest hammer to largest, so this one might be a bit before it gets cleaned up.

Not sure what I will do with such a large hammer, but if I need to break a horn off an anvil I have the hammer for the job now. :D

Oh MY,:o what's it weigh? My first thought was you could use your Fisher as the hammer on this sledge.

Frosty The Lucky.

It actually is not as heavy as it looks. I put it in the scale and it said 17lbs.

Not sure if the scale is correct though.

At my age everything is Heavier than it looks. The ground is farther away too. I have a 16lb. demolition hammer nobody uses more than once.

I was walking through a flea market in Dublin, TX twenty years ago and this hammer head was being used as a weight on a stack of newspapers. The vendor used the newspaper to pack the glass figurines she was selling. I asked her if that hammerhead was for sale - she said it’s free if you by enough figurines. I gave her a $10 bill and she couldn’t stop smiling. We both felt we had got the best of the transaction.

I have used it to make a few creases when bending squares but nothing else. Most of the time I use it to break concrete

Ah, a demolition hammer if I ever saw one! I've used mine to draw large stock but little else and I don't even have any concrete that wants broken.
