J W Bennett Posted October 9, 2011 Posted October 9, 2011 Good day yesterday with the Wabash Valley Blacksmiths at Fowler Park south of Terre Haute In.They hosted the October meeting of the Indiana Blacksmiths Association. I had the honor of demonstrating how to forge a whitetail deer antler shed to a group of about 30 fellow blacksmiths from all over the state. I had real good participation from the group and I received a lot of positive feedback at the end of the demo. (The food was mighty fine too I might add). I didn't get any pics of the demo(to busy doing the demo)...but here are some pics of the finished shed. Quote
bigfootnampa Posted October 9, 2011 Posted October 9, 2011 You created some awesomely accurate details there! Very high quality work! I am especially impressed with the texture near the base of the antler! It seems like a difficult surface to create and I can see that you've done it well. Any hints for us as to how this was done? WmHorus Posted October 9, 2011 Posted October 9, 2011 WoW incredible, any chance for a step by step? please Quote
Steve Sells Posted October 9, 2011 Posted October 9, 2011 He had a rack at Stan's Hammer in for us to see and handle up close. Let me testify that the pic's are crap compared to the real life work, the photos do NOT show the high amount of effort and detail John has in these. Wonderful work John. Quote
J W Bennett Posted October 9, 2011 Author Posted October 9, 2011 I have a step by step written up that I handed out at the demo. I have offered it to the IBA newsletter. If you e-mail me @ [email protected] and I will send you a copy of the pdf. Steve thanks for the kind words. John Quote
CurlyGeorge Posted October 10, 2011 Posted October 10, 2011 Beautiful work John. I wanted to make it over for the demo, but couldn't get away. One of these days. Thanks for posting. :) Quote
Steve McCarthy Posted October 10, 2011 Posted October 10, 2011 Another fine example of your skill and workmanship. Great job John. And Steve Sells ain't lying. Pictures do no justice to seeing these things in person. Quote
dkunkler Posted October 10, 2011 Posted October 10, 2011 Awesome work, so realistic. I hope to see them up close some day. I'll email you for the step by step. Thanks John. Quote
FireCat Posted October 10, 2011 Posted October 10, 2011 Amazing work..! ! ! ! ! I must say as a new wanna-be smith it is work like that, that inspires us new guys to not give up and keep practicing.. thanks for sharing the pics with us and keep up the incredible work. Quote
Frosty Posted October 10, 2011 Posted October 10, 2011 That's some darned excellent work John. I'll be reading your step by step for sure though If you're willing to do a little preview I'd sure like a look at the texturing tools. Frosty the Lucky. Quote
J W Bennett Posted October 12, 2011 Author Posted October 12, 2011 I want to thank everyone who has e-mailed me asking for a copy of the "how to" I am getting behind but will get them out to you. Once again thanks. I have also had two Blacksmithing newsletter editors e-mail me asking permission to put them in their newsletters. I feel pretty good right now. Thanks Everyone, John Quote

Elemental Metal Creations Posted October 13, 2011 Posted October 13, 2011 I will be e-mailing you also. If/when I get good enough to make these I will get rich in this area. Most guys around here live for hunting and will pay BIG$ for something like this! Quote

J W Bennett Posted June 5, 2012 Author Posted June 5, 2012 Hi Everyone, I need some help. I have lost my orignal file somewhere in cyberspace. If someone would be kind enough to send me a copy of the file I sent out I would appreciate it. John And yes I feel stupid! Quote
dkunkler Posted June 5, 2012 Posted June 5, 2012 A copy is on the way via email. It was good to see you and your work at the IBA conference. Quote
