Torin
According to the guy who took this photo The mother of all gorilla welds It didn't even work, there were brackets higher up that were actually holding it in place.
Bentiron1946
Why? Why just waste the electricity and the rods?
Steve Sells
I am not a welder, But I have welded, and I never allow Anything that looks like that out my door! Very sad, that a person that could tolerate that type of end product.

Dodge
Grinding wouldn't help that weld, and I us the term "weld" only in context. LOL We had a term for that type of work. I can't post it here, but its what a bird tends to leave on a freshly washed and waxed car ;)
Steel&Clay
he may as well have just packed soil around the base and spray painted it silver. Might have held better too.
Ten Hammers
Somewhere in my memory banks is a quote from a Schwartzenneger movie. "E-Rasah" This weld is in need of the eraser ( gouge ) or even the torch or plasma to kinda sneak up on it from the side and put it out of its misery. Then a 9" Norton rock to get back to the start. "Yippie-I yeay......cow pattie " ( Jim Stafford song in a movie ). Todd, nice to see you posting here. Been a long time.
aametalmaster
I see that stuff almost daily come into my shop. Someone's neighbor got a welder for his birthday and now he is a welder. Granted we all start someplace but i don't remember ever doing work like that. Here are 3 pics i had handy.. Pic 1 My driveshaft wobbles... Pic 2 My mower needs welded and my neighbor just fixed it.... Pic 3 Can you fix my wood splitter. My uncle tried to weld it and now it needs done right...Bob
unkle spike
My Dad is a welder and one of the things he hates to hear: "My (cousin, Brother in law, neighbor) tried to weld it 3 times and it just wouldn't hold." Hmm welding 304 SS with ERS70S-6 mild steel wire, or worse yet Flux Core, wonder while it didn't hold? Or used a 110v welder on 1/2" thick plate.... I'll probably be on a bit more now. I've got the shop up and running, and I'm actually working on product, and not getting the tools made/repaired enough to work with them. And the weather is better. :)
Iron Dave
that's a weld? that looks like someone tried to polish **** and then put a tube in it Edited May 10, 2009 by Iron Dave
John B
Hey come on, as blacksmiths we know that there is nothing wrong with that weld that a couple of hours in a blast furnace at full heat with other scrap would't cure
Drifter
That looks like some of the farmmer patches I had to cure when I worked in the welding shop. When they got the bill they all howled and said it only took me 10 minutes to fix it myself. They never did whine when they didn't have to bring it back because it broke though. Finnr
My late Dad called welds like that Norwegian dirt farmer welds. Nothing against Norwegians or dirt farmers. But they had the idea if you glob on enough rod it will hold. Then take it to Rex and get it done right. Ted T
It is good that we can have something to laugh at. I am not the best welder, but now I know that I am most likely not the worst welder. ----- ----- I think? Ha Ha Ha Ted Throckmorton
triw
I have to say this I had some welds like that when I was learning to weld with an old buzz box years ago. Would not be proud of it to day but when I got the metal to stick I was a proud puppy. That might be what this picture represent a beginners weld, be proud that he is learning... welder19
There is a time and place for learning and a job like that isn't either....nor does it even come close to meeting the description or definition of a weld. welder19
Pault17
after my first day in a basic stick class I could do better. I showed my teacher the picture and he all but blew a lung
Avadon
It's funny how there can be like 20lbs of rod poured into a thing and then you go up and put your hand on it and it wobbles or breaks. lol The worlds largest cold shut weld.
