August 16, 200817 yr Well here's my 2nd anvil, it's a #100 Vulcan thats in what seems to me to be great condition, no pitting, no sway nada! I dont have a scale for actual but it's #100 enough for me. My first forge was a harbor freight 75-80 lb'er that i left behind in Fl. for some stupid reason but it was hot as all heck loading up that truck so thats prolly why. I'll post a pick of it when i track one down. So cool deal with my Vulcan anvil and heres a cpl pix of it and one of the new forge i built last night to boot. So just an FYI here, I am very new to BS'ing and this is my first real set-up and it not even really set up yet but it's getting there as i go, next i need to take a BS'ing class to become proficient in the art of, of course this place is like a school in itself and i have gotten TONS of helpful info just reading the forums here and it seems that everybody here is quiet giving with answers to questions here, so thx everybody! Oh and all comments are are well taken on anything so long as they are helpful : )

August 16, 200817 yr here my anvils The Anvil on the stand is my father's anvil. He used be a farrier. now he is a ironworker now. He let me use his for over 8 years. Now have my own. just by today for $100 anyone knows what band this is? (for both of them )

August 17, 200817 yr Here is one of my anvils, however the other one is nearly identical. The only real difference between this one and the other is the other one only has one pritchel hole and has some very small chipping around the edge of the face, but not enough to concern me. I don't know for sure the brand or the exact weight but rough guess is 250 pounds. I've asked around before but never been inquisitive enough to find the time to see if there is any writing on the sides... prior to my purchasing this anvil it spent many years under an oil fired furnace at a auto dealership as a prop to hold up one corner. Originally was used when the dealership was just a repair shop making parts for Model T's and such. That stump is what I have been using for several years but it has seen just enough weather to inspire me to salvage a couple new stumps from an old maple that fell at the inlaws place this year. Excuse the mess, the anvil got pushed back into the clutter while I was laid up for a couple years after the motorcycle wreck, this one has found it's way out along with the forge and the oak slab N sassafras log table that holds my vice. if you look at the last picture you can see a glimpse of my drill press. Formerly driven with a leather belt from above at it's original home, now has an electric motor and foot operated power switch that was installed by the prior owner, weighs in at just over 850 pounds and cost me $50. August 17, 200817 yr Can anyone help me identify this anvil. This was given to me, has a chip out of the edge, and cut marks on the horn. The tip of the horn is broken off, but this will beat what I had. The only markings that I've found is the number ten on the foot beneath the horn.
August 17, 200817 yr well my vulcan has a 10 there to and it weighs 110 pounds so maby yours it a 110# vulcan like mine? looks allmost the same as mine
August 18, 200817 yr Saber I would check my scale. Vulcans are measured in 100s. 3=30 5=50 10=100 ect. Checked mine on a industrial scale. Outsider has it now. Ken
August 18, 200817 yr huh thats odd i wonder why mine weighs more than 100 pounds then It is clearly infused with forge magic, which is dragged into existence by the long suffering of a workhorse anvil under useful blows.
August 18, 200817 yr Being cast there will be some variation between anvils so the marks aren't likely to be right on the money. A forged anvil is made, weighted and the weight is then stamped in so it'll be a lot more accurate but only applies to when it was new. Frosty
August 30, 200817 yr Craig, Mainline rail usually runs at maybe 110 or 120 pounds to the yard so maybe that weighs more than you think- unless it is a smaller size than usual.
August 31, 200817 yr Well, I suppose it could be...I didn't weigh it. You can sort of see in the picture it says 85 lbs. on the side (per yard I'm guessing) so I did some quick math to get an approximate weight per inch and in the end came out with 66 lbs. So it must be a lighter grade rail.

I think it may be a Columbian. I haven't cleaned it up very well yet. Maybe someone can provide more info from the pic? I think I will use it for upsetting. 5) a thoroughly thrashed Canadian Blower and Forge. It has a nice wrought iron ring to it when tapped so I think it was a decent quality anvil. Someone must have had a hate on for it in a previous life to destroy it this bad.
September 2, 200817 yr Send that picture of #5 to Postman! I have never run into a lugged base that wan't a Fisher before! I don't think that one with the broken heel is a columbian. The center of the horn seam makes it look like one of the Mexico specials cast using a real anvil as a patttern but not one designed to be cast iron and so prone to failure. Columbian would have sent it out the door with a visible seam on the horn. Edited September 2, 200817 yr by ThomasPowers
