  1. Hey Peyton, I'll be coming out this month and probably bringing a guest. Looking forward to it. Do you know if Elmer will be bringing any hammers out to sell ? Patrick
  2. My first day back to work after the honeymoon I jumped off a truck and my ring got caught on a bolt. It skinned my finger to the bone to my middle knuckle and then the ring broke. Luckily it was a small ring (my Grandfathers, my Mom wanted me to be married in it) and it broke before it completly removed the skin or even pulled my finger off. I should have taken it as a sign lol we divorced at 7 years.
  3. I have 3 sets of those that I ordered from Glenn at GS. I really like them alot.
  4. Blacksmith Little Giant Trip Hammer - eBay (item 330266105149 end time Sep-07-08 11:02:00 PDT) and another http://cgi.ebay.com/Little-Giant-Mayer-Bros-Blacksmith-trip-hammer_W0QQitemZ260279051407QQihZ016QQcategoryZ12578QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem
  5. lol... That would explain why I couldn't make out any other letters. The guy is know for thinking everything he has is worth way more than it actually is. I didn't want him to drive the price up too much because I seemed interested. The anvil looks like it's hardly been used and I went back to make an offer but don't know if it's something that is worth more as a collector than a user. Obviously he did some research after we looked and he claims it is rare and he needs to get $3500 for it ! Then he took a drilling hammer to demonstrate the and proceeded to hit the crap out of it about 3 times until a chunk about 3/16" x 1 1/2" flew off of the edge (luckily right where it should be eased over) right behind the shelf. You could tell that he was embarrassed, but tried to cover by saying When I left , he was talking about I bet you'll see it soon on ebite. That is where he supposedly got his pricing info, but he says I can't believe there are idiots like this clown that are allowed to roam freely within society. I hadn't seen an anvil in this good condition ever and it ends up with this oaf.
  6. A friend told me about an anvil that he saw lying under some rubbish in the back of a shop in town. We tried to get to where we could identify it and assess it's condition without looking too interested. The weight was clearly marked - 1-3-9 (205 # if my math is right) but the maker was not clear. You can clearly make out HILL as part of the name, but not even a portion of any other letters. Beneath that , was irming which I assume would be Birmingham England. Any ideas what this might be ? I'd like to have an Idea what it is before making an offer. Thanks, Patrick
  7. Michael, Sorry so late with a reply. I'm not realy familiar with the BF blowers. What little I know about them I learned when I was at Mike's forge (Yesteryear) I was still working on rebuilding my first Champion and he showed me one of his Buffalo blowers and explained the oiling differences. He could give you better answers on your Buffalo than me. Good luck. Patrick
  8. I'm working on my third small boat. I've built a 10' peapod dinghy , a lapstrake 14' rowboat and now am building a 15' stitch and glue lug rigged cat boat. I get all my plans fron Duckworks. I also bought a set of plans from Jay Binford about 4 years ago for his 34' "Badger dory" and will rig her out with two Chinese junk sails when I get to that point. Jay is a great guy to work with. He amended the plans for free to give me standing headroom below deck ( I'm 6'4" and there are few sailboats that I can walk thru without the risk of bustin' my noggin' )Those plans were very pricey but well worth it. At the time I was actually thinking about it as a live-aboard and hoped to take a couple of years to go sailing, but life got in the way, and more than likely the boat won't be complete for several years, but I'm not giving up on the idea. I'll take some pic's and post them.
  9. One day I need to get me one of those Brooks anvils just because thats my last name name. lol is that a good enough reason to buy a anvil ?
  10. These are not meant to be filled with oil as the Buffalo blowers were. Most old timers greased the gears with hard grease and periodically a few drops of oil thru the oiler. Then you wont be blowing oil down the pipe and all over the fan. Most of the time there are just a few pitted bearings from sitting for years and moisture from condensation causing rust, thus the roaring noise you get from most of these. The bearings in the 400's that I've restored have all been .25" ball bearings but I mic the most intact bearings just to make sure every time anyway. I use white lithium grease on these because it seems to let the fan move more freely. the grease cap on the fan shaft is THREADED on. I've seen several of these damaged from seal pullers because people didn't realize this. I had a hard time finding ball bearings this size for some reason then finally found that they are the most common size in bicycles so I get them from the local bike shop now. As for the other concerns, I have not worked on any portable forges like yours so I'm not sure what to tell you but I have seen the replacement tyure (sp?) that should work for you on ebay in a store called Poorboy blacksmithing or something like that. Hope this helps, good luck
  11. Mike, what is it that would make you personally chose the Refflinghaus over the Ozark Patern ?
  12. The price is good on the euroanvils but I had a couple of people tell me they were dissapointed with theirs. They both said that they dinged the faces badly in a short amount of time even with good hammer control. I looked them up and if you click on the spec sheet it tells you right there that they are only hardned to 42-44 where most others are up around 55-60 but at least they are honest and tell you right up front. I don't know that much about the hardness scale but that seems to be the difference in euroanvils and the other good anvils out there. I know that if it's too hard the edges will chip out if you don't have good control but in my research the experts tell me that 55-60 is ideal, not too hard not too soft. My HB is in good shape but the edges are not too good any more I just want to keep it as a family momento and get a new one to do most work on.
  13. Does anyone have any experience with these ? I'm still using the old family Hay Budden (about 180#)but when I get set up in the new building, I want to pick up a new and bigger anvil. I'd hate to be the one that does in my Great Grandaddy's anvil. It's a hard decision. I am looking at the Nimba, and the Rat-hole also but I'm leaning towards the Ozark pattern anvil. If you guys were going to throw down a couple grand for a new anvil , what would it be and why ? Thanks, Patrick
  14. Got the lathe in her new spot in the wood shop and turned a couple of goose calls and a sample 7" walnut newel post (can't turn stock this heavy on either of my wood lathes) Works great. Will post a few pics soon.
  15. I ran across a small (about 80#)anvil yesterday. There are no markings on it at all but for a star that is about 2" tall on one side. It seems to be very old but looks as if it has never been used. Not a scratch, chip or ding anywhere. Anybody know anything about these ? No pics but might be able to get a couple this weekend. Thanks, Patrick
  16. was a little noisy but I replaced the bearings and works great

    Free lathe

Was out buying chickens the other day and the old guy had a very clean old treadle metal lathe. I thought it was pretty nice so I asked him about it. The treadle had been removed and it has a 1 1/2 hp electric motor currently. It is a Star, made in (or by a co. named)Niagra Falls. Never seen one but it is very ornate, as were many tools built in the old days. I told the guy about my Atlas and how I was learning how to operate it. He asked me to look up his lathe on the web and find out more about it. He called this morning and I told him I was sorry I hadn't had time to look it up yet and he said not to worry."I'd like you to have it" "I think it's great that a youngster like yourself can apreciate good old tools so it's yours" Pretty good early Christmas present from a perfect stranger don't you think ?
  20. I finaly got to see a Little Giant in operation, Iron in the hat had some really good stuff, and Bill was great. I'm two hours away and would gladly drive alot longer for these meetings. This is an awesome group of guys, and if you are within travel distance, and have'nt been , you don't know what you're missing. Thanks Mike, for answering all my questions,I got the new bearings in the blower last night and it's running smooth as Joe Camel now. Now, about the anvil raffle. When I got home, I got a call from some fella' what was hollerin' bout global warmin' and such. He said I should probably demand a recount, as there was obviously a chad hung up on my ticket, which would explain why my anvil went home with some other smith Thanks guys for puting these meetings on. I learn something every time. Looking forward to the next one. Until Then, Happy Holidays, Patrick & Michelle
  21. Looking forward to it. Get the boom hooked up to the Kubota so we can get my new anvil in the van without throwing our backs out :D
