It grows every where here in Nebraska. I've cut some to use as tomahawk and knife handles but it seams to crack really bad during the drying period. I've also got access to old hedge post. The post are very old and dry, but there again they crack and split badly after cutiing them into slabs. How does everyone else get around this problem.. It's great looking wood.

I pay scrap price for new drop off up to 3ft long for 15 cents a pound/ what the scrap yard pays my employer. So 1000lbs of assorted sizes for $150 bucks keeps me in materal for along time.

I did my stump like clodbuster described. works great. after getting it flat I traced the bottom of my anvil on the stump and roughted the anvil shape about 1in deep to set the anvil into the stump. I lined the bottom of the cut out with several layers of roofing felt to help quiet the anvil.

Here's a piece I did a while back and just took pics of today. It's a yard art crane made out of 1/2 bar and has 3 balace points spins in the wind quite easally. It is mounted to a rock with a small clump of cattail on the base.

Yes I'm familar with the book and the creatures of the Burgess Shale. I took a history of life class at the University of Nebraska and the book was a large part of that class. I have been interested in fossels since I was a kid. I down loaded a bunch of pictures of diffrent trilobites and may make a few more they are very cool and I think lend themselfs to being reproduced in steel. The scorpion idea came from a guy I showed the trilobite to. He asked if I could make a scorpion so this is what I came up with. Now I have to see what he'll pay for it. I think about 6 hours in the trilobite and 8 in the scorpion.

I've been side tracked with a syatic nerve problem so haven't done much for a while. Got back in the shop a couple of weeks ago and here are some pics of my latest. One is a prehistoric sea creature called a trilobite. Fossels are quite common and I thought it would make a cool piece. It is made out of 1 1/2 bar and some 1/4in plate the body plates are some 1/8 in die slugs I got from work. The next piece is a scorpion. It is made from 1 3/4 bar for the main body 3/4 bar for the arms and claws. The legs are 1/4 and 3/8 rod.

Could your dad get drop off or scrap from the ship repair shop. I do all my work from scrap I buy from work. I can't see buying 20ft bar I'm going to cut up. I buy all the scrap round bar I can get 1/4 up to 1 1/2 usually 3ft and under. If I need square I make it out of the round. more practice and the cost savings allow more money for tools.

Looks like a decent anvil. edges look good and over 200lbs is a good size. I would go look it over check the ring and rebound and if they are good I would go for it. Just remember auctions are emotional events don't get carried away look it over set your price and see how high it goes. I have never bought an avil at auction as it seems there's always some one who has deeper pockets then I do. Just from the pic and discription I could see it selling around the $400 mark at least in my area.

Here is a piece I made for my first granddaughter. A wall piece for the nursery. Its made of 3/8 rod the flowers are copper foil and the vines are made from 6 ga copper wire. It's definately challenge to do small delecate subject matter. I think it came out good. Adigail is due to arrive the first part of January. First grand child. I have a 2nd granddaughter due in April so I will make a similar piece for Wrigley. I'm looking forward to being a grandpa. Hopefully they might take an intrest in what I do when they get older. I feels good to make them both something that hopefully they will charish when they get older and I'm gone.

I think it was 16ga steel. The fins were hammered to make them thinner on the outside edge. I did send Steve Sells the info for a blue print but I don't know if he ever got around to coding and posting it. I ve never saw it if he did.

The bluing is done with a propane torch. Just watch the steel change colors as it heats then pull back at the first sign of blue and see how far it spreads. If you get it to hot it will turn a silverblue. Then just a clear coat good for indoors don't think it would last outdoors.
