  1. Here are some pics of my latest hawk. It is made from a 32oz ball pien hammer head. First time ive used a 32 oz nice having extra material to work with. The handle is an old broken sledge hammer handle It is decorated with 200 (3oz) of nickle tacks. It also has copper and bone beads and a wild turkey feather.
  2. Looks like a good starter anvil. The edges look good should clean up nice. The gouge in the horn is a little strange is it a torch cut or a casting faw. I think it can be worked around. Try cleaning it up and look for more markings they may be under the rust .
  3. I thought I read somewhere that some of these odd stamps were like shift or forgeing crew marks. My 165lb peter wright has a masions mark (square & compass) stamped in it.
  4. Here is a pic I downloaded somewhere for future use. So I don't know who or how it was done. But it sure is a great piece.
  5. Thanks for the feed back. It's a 54 chevy belair 2dr sedan under the car cover.
  6. This is my latest piece. It was inspired by someone in this forum( can't remember who) that posted pic of a fish he had made using washers. I thought it was very cool and had already downloaded pics of the real fish and after seeing his fish. I decided to get started. Bob is made of oval slugs cut by a laser tube cutter we have at work some sheet steel and the teeth are forged rod. His eyes are used laser lenses.

    opinions?

I would sugest checking in to a diamond back forge. I have the 3 burner blacksmiths forge and it works great I have had it for over 3 years. Heats fast and gets very hot.
  8. One way to sum it up is if I were to win the powerball or mega millions lotteries. What would I do? I would keepon smithing untill I was broke.

    Giant Tongs

Thanks for the feed back. I gave $20 for them with the intent of hanging them in the shop. But who knows I might need a pair and I'll know right where to find them.
  10. I've been in the shop alot latey so havent posted in a while. Here is what I've been making

    Giant Tongs

Had a guy stop buy the shop tonight to see if I wanted to buy these tongs. The handles are 43 in and the jaws are 16 in. I would think the are for sheet metal work. But would be intersted in more info on how they were used. If any one has any info
  12. My good friend gave me a 167lb peter wright anvil when I first started. He then gave me a 75lb unmarked anvil and a 4in postvise. I have made him a knife a tomahawk and a coat hook with a longhorn steerhead on the top. I always have friends dropping of materal, old tools, horseshoes. An other friend stopped by and saw my 1910 champion post drill i had just restored. Next time he showed up with a set of drill bits for the post drill. I will often come home to find a box of old wrenches or hammer heads sitting by the shop door. I have alot of good people helping me support my smithing habit. I always try to get something I made back to them. I tend to work with my shop doors open (weather permiting) and will often have people walking through the neighborhood show up to see what I'm doing. I try to give back by always taking time to explain what I'm doing. Always trying to fan the flame of interest in others.
  13. That's why I make things I like. If they don't sell. I bring them home and hang them up.
  14. Here are pics of a vase I made out of 2.5 X 3.5 tubing. I made it to hold the dozen copper roses
  15. What exactly are we supose to check? Just email address or is there something else.
  16. Here is mine. The photo is of my greatgrandfather in his shop
  17. I started with the 3 burner blacksmiths forge and have never been sorry. The more I do this the larger pieces I find myself attempting and I find my self thinking I may need to build a larger forge. So I wouldn't start out to small. Only issue I've had is the small 20 lb grill bottles kept freezing up. I contacted diamond backand took there advice and now use a 100 lb bottle and have no problems
  18. You are doing some great stuff there. Really like the fish. Welcome to the forum.
  19. I have a 3 burner diamondback forge I had to switch to 100lb bottle because the 20 lb bottles kept freezing up. Cost is also a plus filling a 100 lb is like filling 5 20 lb bottles for the cost of 4.. Last tilme I filled mine it was $78.
  20. This is my card holder I use at shows. Not very feminine
  21. I have had the same problem when I started making hawks. I use old ball pien heads. I found I was not turning the piece evenly so I was working one side more than the other. Now I watch and make sure to work the piece evenly and try to correct the problem as soon as I notice it.
  22. I think not having sides it will not be very efficent. you are going to lose a lot of heat and probibly use a lot of fuel. I have the dimondback three burner forge. works great can run on 4-5 lbs of gas presure. It also has a large door on the side for doing large pieces. When using this large door the efficency does go down and it is hard to work with out good long tongs as the heat comming out the side is very intence.
  23. Good start. Next time try a old ball pien hammer head. I use 16 oz head and have made a dozen or so and they come out nice. should still have pics on my profile page.
  24. After finishing my last piece the 3 lillies in my last post. I decided to try smaller. I was a little more difficult but I think it came out nice. This piece has 7 lillies and eight leaves in a 15 in circle. The hole piece was made from 1/2 in round bar heat colored and clear coated
  25. I might sugest puting your location on your profile. Heck you might live right around the block. If you do come on over and check out my shop and hammer something.
