  1. It has been a few (15) years since I've felt the need to do any forge welding. A couple of months ago, I turned an old porch post into a coat rack for my father in law. The nails I pulled were old iron cut nails. The post is 149 years old. Anyway, I stacked up the nails, twisted a wire around and went to the forge. A few cold shuts but I think it went OK. Now to decide what to do with it.
  2. I have been interested in blacksmithing since I was a wee lad. I made a cheesy 16 gauge great helm with roofing nails as rivets in welding class and a butted chainmail haubergeon when I was a teenager over 10 years ago. I have recently become very interesting in smithing again. The first thing I need is an anvil. I have been checking craigslist often and I found one for much cheaper than most others. It has a wavy recessed edge near the top that bothers me. Can you anvil experts tell me if the is a red flag or nothing I need to worry about? Farriers anvil, 135# $295, includes stump. The first thing I plan to make is nails. Regards, Berserk
  3. Just thought id share a couple photos of a nail header I made recently. This is my third nail header and I decided to make it the style I had seen on Angele-shop's website since it looked awesome to use not needing to hold onto it while heading a nail. I love this style and I aim to replace my others with ones like these when I get the time. My only issue with this type of nail header is that now I either need to make a hot cut hardy that fits my anvils pritchel or simply throw my current one in the vise...
  4. I went to my first ever blacksmith group forge meeting. Met some great people, learned a lot and made the following items (pictures below): 2 nails 2 matching(sorta, they're about an 1/8" off in length :( ) brass brushed wall nail hook leaf tipped wall nail hook leaf tipped hanging hook (fits a pot rack we have in our kitchen) Both leaves brushed with brass wire brush. All hooks were rubbed warm with beeswax. I had so much fun and learned so much. If I hadn't been hooked before... making these hooks have guarranteed it. I left all but the end hanging leaf hook with them for them to sell at an event they'll be demonstrating at next weekend. http://www.iforgeiron.com/uploads/gallery/category_23/gallery_28530_23_135807.jpg http://www.iforgeiron.com/uploads/gallery/category_23/gallery_28530_23_3858.jpg

  6. . Here is a mild steel header I made for making copper nails (3/8 " x 1-1/2 " flat forged into a swage block for a dome). The square hole opening in the header is a frog hair over 1/8 " square, and I started with 3/16 " solid copper wire (#4). The nails are approx 7/8 " long and have about a 3/8 " head. This job only requires 56 copper nails, so I have a few left from the 20 made so far, not that many compared to the old days of making nails for a living.
