A friend of mine asked if I could make him a dead strait adze for some wood work he does. He didn't want any kind of bow to the blade. He also wanted a pass through handle. I'm not sure which side to bevel for this type. I was going to put a single bevel on the bottom or handle side. He will be using it for limbing mahogany in the field. I made it out of a chunk of tierod. The handle is hickory with linseed and terpintine finish. I haven't done a heat treat yet until he looks at it and is happy.

The more I have read this book it is full of smack talk. He uses the term third rate blacksmith a lot. It makes me wonder if there was other books at the time that he didn't like or didn't like where blacksmithing was headed. Its almost like a turn of the century rap battle.

It is an old printing. It's just new to me. There is a whole section of old book donated from around town. I tried the kindle thing but still prefer paper. Especially the smell of an old book. Reminds me of my grandma.

Looking through an old book store in tonapah today and found this. It's from 1907 and reprinted 1913. Full of old timey writing and a lot of products I've never heard of. One thing I found interesting was about quenching files in molten lead.

That is very cool ranchman. -
Do you get any cracks or splits in the antler when it dries? Does it push right on or does it take some persuasion.
-
Very cool file work. Some mean looking knives.

I have an elk shed in my garage waiting for the right projects. Around hear big Rocky Mountain elk and big mule deer. Usually not to hard to find those but moose are hard to come by in the desert.

Looks great. Where did you get the moose antler from?

The spine is a little over an eighth of an inch. The blade is 4 1/2 inches and 9 inches over all. It's pretty hefty. I've split some kindling with it and was still able to cut up an apple.

Looks really good. I like the black contrast. That rosewood looks great I don't think G10 would look as good. Can't really envision it.

Great piece Das, it reminds me of A Klingon bird of prey.

I like the dreamy love song in the background. Very appropriate. a sandblaster might be helpful with the more intricate handles. Very very cool knife.

Doc, very sorry to hear about that. I am close by Nevada standards so if you need any more help send me a message. Might be a good reason to finally meet up.

I am using The punches for eyes on animal heads and things like that. Not punching holes. The knife is made from the tang end of an old farrier rasp. Had a left over back end laying around. -

Made my first integral handle blade. The handle is temporary until I can get ahold of something better. It was made from a piece of leaf spring I found. Quenched in vegetable oil. Then did 2 cycles in the oven at 400degs. The spine is about 1/4 as wel as the handle. finish is rough but I am over all happy with it.

Made a new nail header today. Had to make a new square punch for it as well. My old one was a little big and didn't have a very clean hole. -
He's got a lot of character. Love the nose.

I really liked the chainsaw sharpening technique.

I just noticed the rest of the instructional videos on the forum. I will be checking them out. This one was very helpful for me. I'm about a year into smithing and have a lot to learn. Thanks for posting these. I really like the pip feature. thats a good idea for the skull heads as long as they are driven into something soft. Maybe something you could put through a predrilled hole and bend it over.

That look always reminds me of a monster from a movie. I can't remember which one. Maybe a lord of the rings or something? A rock monster with lava inside. -

Grab the tie rods. If you set up for forge welding you could use the chains. Sprockets make neat decorative pieces. The steering stem should be good as well. ive had luck with looking up the parts online to find the actual alloys.
