  1. You can use spikes for anything you would use mild stock for. Good for larger hooks and camp tools. I have been working working on learning how to make animal heads out of them as well. You can make knives and tomahawks and stuff like that but they don't harden up very well. YouTube has a lot of diffent projects to try.
  2. Does it have to be engraved? Maybe write it in with a welder. Or make the letters out of smaller stock and find a way to affix them. that is a beautiful cross by the way.
  3. I quick drive through the desert. The amount of dumped material is insane. The arid climate preserves metal indefinitely. You do have to be careful of protected areas but unposted public land has plenty of resources. The is laws about anything over 50 years old.
  4. Das, great work. It looks like a good multifunctional knife. I like the pattern you got out of it. I have been working with cable lately. It's fun but very dirty doesn't seem like you ever get everything out.
  5. Sheepsfoot. It's one of my favorite blade on my blaster multi tool. You could flatten out the curve a little on the cutting edge.
  6. I know how everyone feels about rebar. I have a lot of it laying around. I've been making bottle openers and other small things. I like the "Steve Steaming Twist". Swedge, interesting a bout the "M". Hopefully I can start reaping the rewards someday.
  7. I was using up some rebar I have had lying around the shop today. I started making a letter opener. I squared off the handle and drew out the blade. Looking at the handle I had left the ridges on the corners. I was going to round them off but I thought they might look cool if I do a twist. So here's what it turned like. Never seen it done before. Does it have a name? I am calling it a "poormans pineapple twist".
  8. Worked on a outdoor wreath hook for the wife. I made it from some 3/8th mild. Took some ideas from ausfires nail hooks he has been making but with out the nail. Hung it with some galvanized box nails but I think I will make some nails for it.
  9. Love the pattern on it. Is it just me or is the handle a little short?
  10. Calming knife? That is a great description for it. Really like the contrast between the two woods.
  11. I love the framed ones. Very cool pieces.
  12. I really like the shape of the skinner. What type of wood for the handles. I've only done a couple knives myself so I don't have a lot of criticism. Will you leave the hammer marks in or grind them out more? Might be difficult with the handles affixed.
  13. Great work das. I love the mandibles.
  14. Very nice piece aus. Even if it was a good wrench I think you could sell the sculpture for 3 times as much.
  15. So I shined up the blade and did a soak in vinegar for about an hour. I did it before I heat treated just to see if I could get a pattern. I think I will leave this one be and try another piece with a heat treat to see the difference. Frosty, Thats a good point about the twist. I wasn't planning on putting a twist in the piece at all. I was getting a lot of delam on the handle and thought I could twist it back shut. Still had to do a lot of filing to knock off the little flyers. Thank you all for the great info.
  16. Latticino, this is my first pattern weld of any kind. Does the blade have to be heat treated for the pattern to come out?
  17. Just did my first cable Damascus. It was a piece of an electric shovel trip cable. Turned out better than I thought it would.
  18. Anvul. I have been told I have a Pacific Northwest accent. Didn't know there was such a thing until I moved to Nevada. Also I drink Pop not Soda.
  19. So just doing the math you are looking a 28 12hr days? How long did it actually wind up being? Amazing work. Love all the fine detail. You could probly look at it for years and still see something new. Great job.
  20. What about pages from a book. Would they stand up in the acrylic? I used to have a deconstructed blasting cap in acrylic on my desk for training purposes that was pretty cool. It had the primer charge, base charge, and timing fuse all pulled out to show the internals. Might be hard to get you hands on those materials these days. Even if you could I wouldn't recommend dissecting one. Any how I would show a picture but I guess someone needed more than me and it disappeared.
  21. Here is my take on the holder. Very cool project. Thanks for the idea B HoSS.
  22. Found a good use for rebar. I have made some bottle openers in this style. need to figure out how to give it legs.
  23. I just got a nice set of wolf jaws that I really like for Christmas. Very multi functional but a little big for smaller projects so I go to with my old trusty farrier tongs.
