I started off on vise grips. I buy tongs locally but there's a very nice fellow that makes nice tongs google "GS tongs"

That's a nice anvil. I was supposed to get a soderfers which was 71lb, once I saw the anvil I was surprised by its size so I got something bigger. I noticed soderfers ring very loud for some reason.

G'day looking on eBay for anything that is useful and came across some blacksmith leg vises. Found a very nice blacksmith leg vise with no rust and 5' jaws, the seller has told me jaws close but will not open. I've been told it's the screw/bolt or thread box? Cheers

Early review of the 2.75 Ibs Japanese Forging hammer
Gorō replied to Clover Saint's topic in Hand Hammers
And I thought Japanese/Doghead/Sawyer hammers were only good for lighter work such as bevelling a blade. -
Nice man! ive found a 5' blacksmith leg vise on eBay for under $100aud. Did you pay a good price for yours??

So it's definitely associated with the military then by the looks of it. Thanks fellas

Ah it was a spur of the moment when JHCC mentioned Sheffield England and so I thought about those 3 places....

England's Sheffield, Germany's Solingen and Japan's Seki... Blade capitals of the world!

Handled hot cut tool?
Gorō replied to Gorō's topic in Hot Cuts, Anvil devils, metal cutting on the anvil.

I was thinking of upsetting the punch part that broke off and then try to taper it and fix up the hammer eye. To make a touch mark would I neeed to engrave a design or something? It's something I haven't thought of yet.

If I get this one, this will be my second dog head hammer. I've got a 2.2 pound dog head hammer from Glen from GS Tongs. It does take some getting use to it.

Found this in the shed today. I'm guessing it's a hot cut tool?

Is that even possible to angle the flame from the burner? I thought it would just be straight. Ive read the PDF about the assembly of the T burners. What is the fitting that is connected on the Tee peice? I know inside the Tee peice there's a mig welder tip It looks like a flare fitting that connects to the hose and regulator?? I don't have any experience with gas fittings so I apologise for my inexperience...
-
Ohh ok, my inexperience is showing! I couldn't tell from the pictures.

Question about the T burners, the holders/sockets with the screw/bolt. Is that going through the holder and burner pipe?
-
Self taught as well, had a quick first lesson on bladesmithing which was hammering in bevels and straightening the blade. Wear your safety glasses Keep an eye on the workpiece in the forge. thats all I can think of at the moment

Day by day, bit by bit I'm slowly getting there. Ive got some old axles,cv drive shafts and rusted cable from my old mans winch on his trawler I'm hoping to put to good use when everything is set up! Initially I tried punching with a handled punch I got from eBay but it didn't move the steel how I wanted it. I'm probably going to remove the handle and reshape it

How did you go with the electrolysis tank? I've never done something like that before it would be interesting to try it out for fun. Ive seen a few videos on YouTube, what are you using for the tank power supply???

120?! That's a lot John, I've got about 5. I started off with vise grips. I haven't made any tongs yet.

I use to practice martial arts so I know what you mean about posture and stance. It does help for the lower back when your working at the anvil for more then 3 hours. I usually hammer with my right hand and on occasions with my left when my right hand is too tired. But the human body has its limits, that's where the power hammer comes in the picture ha ha When I'm using other people's anvils unless it's a RR track I worry about damaging the anvil face so I try not to tap my hammer on the face.

Nice collection there! Ive never seen a shifter like that as well. I wonder why it was designed that way.
