  1. Had a leak in my old ones and there was a sale for some new economy burners so I thought why not. these look abit on the small side but it will be used on a long forge that I have set up only for heat treating.
  2. Dog head/cutler/sawyer are usually weight forward hammers
  3. Looks good, there's a bunch of fellas in Australia recently that had Alec Steele teaching the tools to make tools class selling striking anvils for $450 AUD how many years did it take to drift the hardy hole??? Everything looks fairly straight forward but drifting the hardy hole. are you going to harden the striking anvil??
  4. God bless America that is very neat, I'm haven't done any forge welding. What times of steels were using for that Damascus pattern??
  5. Did you have to bolt/clamp it down to the stump?? I put some oil on my anvil because I noticed it gets rusty quite easily when you leave it sitting outside
  6. Lol boulder rounding hammer, nice anvil
  7. I didn't say my anvil was galvanised. I was talking about something else. Yeah I've heard of those methods myself aswell.
  8. I've recently used an angle grinder with a flap disc to clean the surface rust on my anvil and then left it there for about a week and a half and there are rust spots on it again. Im thinking maybe I should have applied some grease of oil to prevent the anvil from rusting? How quick would acid strip galvanisation if I left it in an acid bath?
  9. Whats wrong with used motor oil? Can I use used motor oil for tempering since it has a high flash point??
  10. That's why I just used a flap disc instead of the cutting/grinding disc. Not sure if I should weld a stand for it or just get a tree stump....the tree stump is so much easier. I see lots of people use tree stumps
  11. You sure? I'm not sure what brand it is but I thought it was those old english wrought iron anvils.
  12. Here is a picture of mine, can't identify the maker for some reason. I've just did a quick clean up with an angle grinder.
  13. Yeah Eveleigh locomotive workshop is located near the city cbd in Sydney Australia. I did not know myself that they had all that running gear inside the locomotive workshop until I had watched Alec Steele's YouTube video, always thought it was heritage to the old locomotive workshops in Australia but didn't expect there would be industrial style forges and power hammers.
  14. That sure is a long time ago Thomas! I wasn't even born yet
  15. But how long would it take for a person to become a full time professional blacksmith/bladesmith? What I was trying to point out to the OP that its not a common trade. Compare that number with say plumbers or carpenters. Theres no structured training around it its all what you put in and learning on the job where as other trades all have structured training etc. But don't quote me on this I might be wrong. I pretty much started in a friends shed making knives.
  16. haha like it how you note that you don't need spring steel for the leg vise spring, it was good how you described the parts on the leg vise.
  17. I find that in this day and age most guys that do blacksmithing do it as a hobby to be honest. But there are a few that are full time blacksmiths/bladesmiths such as Alec Steele, Walter Sorells etc
  18. http://www.iforgeiron.com/index2.html/blueprints/original-series/bp0078-the-metallurgy-of-heat-treating-for-blacksmiths-r306/ Cant see the link you posted Dustin, but I found this blueprint about heat treating on IFI pretty informative
  19. I like how you left the fire scale near the spine of the knife for that "forged" look
  20. Geez you Americans get good deals on anvils! How heavy is it Derek?

    Hofi Hammer

Hey Glenn from your experience with the Hofi hammer is there any diffrences between the cast and forged hammer??? Im still thinking whether or not I should get one Cheers Why do you constantly feel a needs to quote an entire page before making a simple comment like this? It is an issue when over half the membership of IFI still pay for bandwidth used. They get upset at paying to see the same pictures and then they complain to us.
  22. Section 4 of the public stores Act 1875.....ohh umm gee
  23. Did you forge that or stock removal?
