"Anvils in America", page 303, Serial Number 50,001-60,000 = Date --1900 (+/-) 2 years.

If the horn was a critter’s face and the heel was the back of its head and described as a biologist or MD would, then the serial number was on the Right Front foot.

This anvil sold ($2,100) in central PA -- 486lbs, no visible markings except a serial (?) number on the RF foot.

On some post vises, I've seen 2 opposing wedges (rather than a single wedge) to tighten the vise and top mounting bracket.

Sycamore has interlocking grain, which makes it difficult to split. Flat-sawn boards are prone to twist. But, as a big block, sycamore is a very good wooden base.
