  1. Well, yes, but I was thinking about the effects of leverage, momentum, etc.
  2. They'd be a lot stronger blows, too. Mechanical advantage, and all that.
  3. Plaster of Paris will break down when heated to forging temperatures, so it's no wonder yours didn't last. Read the JABOD threads for good discussions of earthen fills.
  4. Fresh-cut willow smells pretty weird, too.
  5. Rebar bottle openers are great Thank-Yous for mechanics and construction folk who let you pick through their scrap bins.
  6. Well, one of the motorcycles has a Minnesota license plate.
  7. A nice enough little video about making frying pans, but there’s a rather unusual “treadle” hammer shown, starting around 1:50. It’s nicely made, but it seems rather inefficient.
  8. But to answer your question, handsaws are made from a wide range of steels, depending on age, purpose, quality, and country of origin.

  11. I’m under the weather today, but Michael and Lola have been keeping me company.
  12. 8. The attachment for the rope needs to be moved closer to the hinge, for greater mechanical advantage. This was discussed HERE.
  13. The engravings of naturalist Ernst Hæckel can be a great source of inspiration.
  14. Very interesting. Thanks for the video. And welcome to IFI! If you haven't yet, please READ THIS FIRST!!!
  15. My Mousehole (aka The Undisputed King of Anvils) went through a similar transition when I siliconed it down onto its metal base: it's not just a reduction in volume, but also in pitch. In other words, the higher frequencies that ring so painfully (and that sustain for so long) are muted by the silicone and the magnet, so the high pitches that are most damaging to the hearing are significantly reduced.
  16. Welcome to IFI! If you haven't yet, please READ THIS FIRST!!! I like your look. It's deliberately primitive, to be sure, but there's a sophistication of line and form nonetheless. "Primitive" doesn't have to equal "crude".

  18. Soft maple would be fine for this application; just don't expect it to last. But, as ThomasPowers says, sugar maple (acer saccharum) = hard maple.
  19. Make the handle from hickory and the head from either maple or ironwood.
