Think my eyes were deceiving me since the divots Looked like raised bumps until I looked again and saw divots in the bottom part of the bowl in the first picture. Your hammered effect is very neat and uniform and looks excellent.
  3. Welcome aboard Silentnswift. There is so much good knowledge here that if you don't pick any up you aren't reading.
  4. Looks like someone will be making some hammers.
  5. Thats a long haul for coal for you Ethan. Hope you find something closer.
  6. Can't say I've used too many other types of coal other then to try some of the tractor supply anthracite which I still have most of that sitting in bags. I don't get much large clinker from it. He said its Connelsville coking coal. I've had good success with it. Deffinately get the washed coal and tell him your blacksmithing with it and he will get you or point you to the better sized washed coal.
  7. He will load up whatever you want. Or probably let you fill sacks or buckets. He has a scale and weighs the vehicle coming in and going out. I understand the distance but might be worth it to save on the price difference.

Very nice Vaughn. The pattern you got inside versus outside makes me think that you hammered from the outside onto something with that pattern on the inside?
  9. Shamus, did you ever check out Gillespie coal yard in Fayette City? No bagged coal but it was around $80. A ton for bituminous coal. He should be open again soon or now. His usual customers are home heating type but I was talking with him about blacksmithing last time I was there and he seemed interested. Nice guy.
  10. If you make a stand, I would hope you make it suiting to the look of the anvil. Someone cared enough to atleast try to fix that anvil. It's great that it atleast get some use however many years later.
  11. Nice. I have full faith that you could restore it. I think it has a lot of character tho. But myself having two good complete anvils and a twisted sense of tastes in character, in the end it's yours to deal with
  12. Glad to see that your giving Frankenstein's monster some new life
  13. No lesson like the one of putting too many irons in the fire. ( I guess it all depends on skill and what your doing and fire control.) Im guilty of getting distracted just long enough to burn up hours worth of work. I really need to quit learning that lesson. Tho I re-learn it less often now.
  14. Think you'll be wanting bigger holes in the tuyere, and a T at the air inlet pipe so you'll have an ash dump. Think of a T on its side. the bottom part can have a flapper or lid to keep air from escaping when you arnt dumping ash.
  15. screw looks bad. I could be wrong. maybe wait for the next deal.
  16. umm.... Pictures might help. is it a post vise or machinest vise? are the threads on the screw good? Is it all there?
  17. Looks like a dragon head to me, and the cube twist adds to the effect. Nice work Nick.
  18. Search for "Another Rail Road Iron Anvil" it's a post by Charles Stevens. He made an excellent versatile anvil from one. link... http://www.iforgeiron.com/topic/42290-another-rail-road-iron-anvil/#comment-433693

    Demo smithy setup

Glad you found some pictures! I had a great time. Would have been better if it was a week long. I also really liked getting to forge using the double lung bellows.
