Das Wulf, Re - read all of the above. Most of it applies Universally to those amongst us including YOU who give a hoot about the world around us. Now, let's have a competition, just you and me, as to who is the biggest, rottenist failure: You Lose. I don't have to know anything about you to claim that prize, my arrogance disqualifies you. In 2003, my world instantly unraveled. In 2012, I discovered that all of the 9 years of work of putting it back together was for absolutely nothing - I could not, with all of my strength, save one single life. I was as the walking dead when I stumbled upon IFI and this Brother/Sisterhood, and these rough-shod, down-to-earth people were what I clung to. With them, waited it out, continued to rebuild my fortitude, discovered that my twelve year ordeal had altered my brain chemistry, whereupon I took measures to get back on the level. Be Stoic Brother, wait it out. You are here for a great purpose, if You Want to Be. At 58 years of age, most of my most desperate fortunes have reversed - the life that I could not save now thrives by my side. Had I given up in three years, five years, or eight, two people would have been lost Forever. Prepare yourself for the rest of your life to step into your great purpose. Thousands of people will have an unnamed person and his loved ones in their prayers this evening. Robert and Sheila Taylor

I like the end-grain floor, I'd like to walk on some of that. Below is what I use here and there; not pictured is a 100 sq ft out-building with the same system, that has been stable going on 16 years. The Knack box weighs 360# empty, and the three drill presses, 250# each (all on wheels). I will provide prep details if requested, but 1/4" grout spacers make this system very repairable, if needed. Dear Mr. Gote, all is well and amicable. I tend to view the people of this community as being, on average, outside of the average, outside of the norm, if you will. More specifically, those of us who shape glowing steel, et al., into a manifestation of our vision, our imagination: We tend to stand apart from those who believe that oranges and bananas grow on store shelves (I know of these people), and in that sense, I attribute to "us" a rogue spirit - indeed, we are non-conformal, at our best. I often accuse my spouse of being a hoodlum, but only to imply something quite honorable about her character. Consequently, I am honored to in conversation with you, as well. Robert Taylor

Sharpies are NOT accurate marking devices
Anachronist58 replied to natenaaron's topic in Everything Else
rockstar.esq, that's an ear full. I must consult my ancient dictionary. Last night I was (virtually) under a microscope scraping titanium from the cylindrical lands of a carbide reamer. The Sharpie was deployed to "proof" the "precision" of the material removal. We call it "cutting paint", when we have to remove <.0001" of material at a time. I request more time to consider your analogy, as my buffer is currently maxed out. Robert -
So in Alaska they call 'em beer heaters?

Those jaw faces, and especially the screw, are VERY clean. I am not familiar with the mount. And who would squabble over the price? Good score. Robert Taylor

What was this used for?

If you live within a hundred miles of San Diego, it is useless hazardous waste. I will be happy to pick it up for disposal. If NOT, then I would say it's a scrolling table, and a nice one. But what do I know - ....... Robert Taylor -
I going to say, "I don't know", is the most common answer. "Richard Feynman once said, "I think I can safely say that nobody understands quantum mechanics."[67] According to Steven Weinberg, "There is now in my opinion no entirely satisfactory interpretation of quantum mechanics."[68]" (from Wikipedia, "Quantum Mechanics".) Depends on how old you are, and if you ever get into bonified machine shop work. Put it on a shelf and admire it, for it is a nice piece of technology. Hmmm..... I have a mag chuck...... On second thought, I think it's poisonous - perhaps you might send it to me for proper disposal . Robert Taylor

A curious fellow, this de Quincy. Hydrocarbon combustion will be the engine of Human Endeavor for quite some time to come. The key for weathering the future changes will be in the development of closed-system oxidation/sequestration of carbon. Adiabatic efficiency (some law of Thermodynamics) only exists in models - The question for which we await an answer is, will this this technology be scalable to produce a net reduction in CO2 emissions. Since I am neither a mathematician, nor an earth scientist, I have no position concerning "climate change". Additionally, I have put myself out on a limb. Feel free to test your saws. Robert

And here is the link to the Oak Ridge release, in which is a link to the specific paper on this process. Appears to have some bonus material beyond the scope of the PM article. I hope I get time to read this soon.... https://www.ornl.gov/news/nano-spike-catalysts-convert-carbon-dioxide-directly-ethanol Robert Taylor

just blew up at the love of my life and best friend
Anachronist58 replied to natenaaron's topic in Everything Else
So true SpankySmith, I have found that charging in on my hands and knees and with the tenacity of a bulldog gets me thrown out into the yard quite swiftly. Thank goodness the smithy has a rain cover and a firepot. Mind you, only rarely do I fope badly enough to ignite this level of conflagration. After a spell, I will charge in again. Soon enough, I am allowed to stay in the house. Hang in there, natenaaron. Robert Taylor -
Found an Anvil For Sale
Anachronist58 replied to Anachronist58's topic in Anvils, Swage Blocks, and Mandrels
I will go out this morning and caress my beautiful little 88# Soderfors, and continue some cold work I've been doing. It will be quite cathartic just as the words from The Gang on this thread have softened the blow of losing what I never had, my sweet dream trampled by Savage Nature, and the Weak and Pathetic groveling forth in this life, miserable, and bereft of Glorious Anvil Victory. Natenaaron, at least my seller let me know the status of the deal, which I appreciate. Robert Taylor -

Anachronist58 replied to Anachronist58's topic in Anvils, Swage Blocks, and Mandrels
I HAVE BEEN SWOOPED. Someone is driving out from NEW MEXICO to pick it up - after I offered full price. I really really wanted that anvil (sigh) I am trying to be sad about it, but Mrs Taylor looks so beautiful this morning, and the chronic pain is isolated to one small spot. Life must be good after all (sniff) Robert Taylor -
Picked up an anvil today! Help me identify?
