  2. also remember if ya don't get it done in 1 session, heat it to non-mag and let it cool in (i use lime) till the next time you play with it. but there is a 100 was to do the same thing, find what works for you, good luck, jimmy
  3. looks to me like it's cast iron, but, i could be wrong....but ya never know. bur a swage block is a posibility, but let us know the ifs, ands, and buts.
  4. who says that not a "real" anvil gtaw? not me- be well, jimmy
  5. well all you did was harden it- not temper in atf. what you are asking is about differental heat treat-i don't do it but iffin i recal it is normalize and heat edge and quench then temper-i agree with good steel and sanding, buti dissagree with how ya lit the forge(accelerent) and your atire- be more wise and careful-be a good example.maybe try clay on the spine? please don't take this as a condemnation- isn't ment to be.but you need to do a lot more reading - lots of info in the b/p's hate to see you put work in on something that will fail- but it will happen. hang the blade up so ya see's it and remember, best of luck, jimmy
  6. glay ti hear your ok,jayco.be easy and don't over do it. i had a hand in colorado that had a pacemaker,he coulden't be around gen sets, expecialy any dc equipment.so the company gave him a yard job, well any way glad ya feelin better and do find out what you can be around, keep us informed, jimmy

  11. while all is appreciated, there needs to be some order. i understand late arrivals and such, but, they will be welcome ,but, they don't need to say howdy to each and everyone in the roon. that's nice but it dose break up the discussion. me. personaly gain something everytime i get there.i don't have much to contribute, wether skill or knowledge wise. best of luck, given it was dropped in your lap,it can/will work or i wouldn't waste my time. but your efforts are appreciated. jimmy
  12. canola oil is lighter. i use non-foaming hyd. oil(is what i have) but i cut a drive shaft down so i can put it by the forge and heat it up while forging. but remember it can catch on fire so have a plate ready to smother it out. i never used 1095 but some 1080 normalize 3 x harden, shine up and then temper@ 350-when the wife is gone...for 2 hrs. check with a file if too hard retemp @ 375 then check with a new sharp file.they tell me that a new chain saw file will "bite" at about a 58/60 hardness.all hear say but it works- hope this is as clear as mud, have fun, be safe.and good luck.jimmy
  13. you a very dangerous mutha indeed!!! well done, jimmy
  14. i believe most valves are on the intake side...but on a hair dryer..it may burn it up because of over heating the motor.that being said, you may cut a slit across the pipe and use tin to gate the flow of air,but as said above, pay attention and don't leave the metal in the fire too long, have fun and hope this helps, jimmy
  15. same here james- unemployed, but i in the oilfield.but italways turns aroune- member when a door closes god, opens a window.maintain the faith, best of luck.jimmy
