  1. that was quite informative thank you for the reference!will be making some maces soon getting ready for ren fare!
  2. forged .. it is possable to get that look by upsetting...
  3. good deal! i like my champion 400 ...
  4. ya i use a homemade tumbler and have used a small cement mixer that has been slightly reworked also... its almost mandatory if you do alot of smaller stuff..highly reccomend tho they are noisy so make a sound deadening enclosure...
  5. what brand is it ? i have a post drill at home thats parts.....will not be home for a few months but if its the same drill ide be willing to make a deal for the part...
  6. well ime getting ready to hit the road also first stop pacific primitive rendezvous .... the ren fare was good this year hope all goes as well...
  7. a good place to pickup some stock is in snohomish called whitesides they are on highway 9 and are in clearview ...(basically a spot in the road heading to snohomish) tell um Eric the blacksmith sent you (it wont help on price but they probably remember me). i am up in that neiborhood every year before the Puyallup fair ... good luck and you might want to join the nwba ... found um to be most helpful.
  8. junk yard hammers ... i know at one time there were a bunch of them made from leftovers layin around but there are no plans you have to figure want ya got and make it work...
  9. tumbler is a popular way to clean off scale ....also a sand blaster works for bigger stuff...
  10. nice tongs tho if you are going to sell them you will want to pick up the time a bit... well built tho reminds me of ocp tongs .
  11. http://www.admiralsteel.com/ these guys sell it and ship ....
  12. ya if ya ant got a anvil its not bad but... last 100 lbr i had i sold for 200 and it was nicer than that... i use a fisher in my main shop and like it but the edges are a little soft... at 450 ide be tempted to save a bit more and get a new one of the various brands available... check around with neibors and friends you would be suprised what people have layin around....
  13. the dish is solidly attached the pointed part goes thru the pan then a rivet set that is a little smaller than the hole thru the pan is used to pien over a bit of the spike ... hard to describe an kinda hard to get right but it can be done... helps if you make a sholdier for the pan to rest on...
  14. ive seen prices all over the place for anvils ... and sometimes a real high price does manage to sell but not to me... ebay makes some people think they have gold cause they dont look at completed listings ...if you go by what people are asking (with no bids) there are some real spendy anvils out there ... but i have gotten deals also its just on how much looking your willing to do ..and how fast you want/need it...
  15. i would not use the new horn as a drawing die (like you can with a unbroken anvil) other than that i think it should work fine... good luck!
  16. and ya need ta run around wearing whode and nuttin else !
  17. ya go for it ! in oregon 50 for a large post vice is a good deal
  18. edward shears are nice the only problem i had with um is it takes 2 people to run um one to hold the metal and the other to run the lever ... i believe the capacity on that is 1/2 X4 flat stock i know i could shear several 3/8 bars at once on the one i had... great find ! the riviter i think was probably for leather (at least that what it looks like to me). never heard of the brand name of the pedistal grinder but there were many companys making them around 1900-1920....
  19. you would be better to find a smith in your area that can show you the first time.... All the descriptions in the world arnt as much use as a 30 minute demonstration from a good smith. I belong to the nwba group and at theyre getogethers there is usually a member with a coal forge showing how to forge weld a chain link...good practice ...
  20. if you can swing it i'de go with some type of powered punch... much easyer to punch with one heat that way... ive got a #5 fly press and hav'nt got useing it as a slit drift yet .... if you figure it out the setup please post...
  21. thank you for posting!! nice to see him working at his new shop!
  22. pure bees wax also works for a finish tho the oils look better longer ... if your demoing and selling beeswax is handy cause it isnt as messy...
  23. dont figure ta get picked on much ... bein able to swing a 2 1/2 lb hammer all day usually makes um think twice... tho also i usually dont get upset easy .. take out all my agressions on the hot metal..... ya just need to forge more !!
  24. ide visit boston harbor and the constitution ... also sturbridge village is kinda neat... havnt been there in quite a few years but that is what i went to ...
