  1. too bad a certain past memberr isnt still around, he would love this thread, he said he could taste the alloy content of steels lol (his name was left off intentionally)
  2. Watching Animal planet, there is a show called Treehouse Masters, this refers to " Treehouse Z" season 6 ep 4 They have a clueless wonder doing some metal work on the show. After twisting the metal for making his railing, he quenches it in a plastic bucket of water, and explains he is annealing it to make it softer, Where do they find these people? Dont these shows have proof readers for accuracy? or at least hire skilled labor?
  3. what does tempering have to do with it hardening or not?
  4. And gas welding, Its like a cross between braze and TIG without the expensive gear
  5. The seems to have an overly long throat. What did the designer say when you asked them about their design having problems?
  6. where do you get the Ores to smelt? since you are smelting 2 different metals, or did you mean melt?
  7. Since you didnt post your forge question in the forge section, which is subdivided into solid fuel/gas etc sections I have no idea what you are building. Scrolls may not fit a small gas forge. but I figure that may be gas anyway, so I will relocate you post to where it belongs.
  8. every time he lifts that blanket it puts more fibers into the air
  9. you are forgetting its not just operating temps, in his annealing scenario he is also stirring up the fibers, that does not happen in a forge, so I fear you have a very different idea of what is unsafe than most of us
  10. while it slowly kills you? not a good idea to mess with unsealed ceramic wool. Use ashes or vermiculite, its much safer and has been used for years safely
  11. I have no idea, you can weigh on a scale it to find weight, but you didnt give us any info, no photo, not even what country its in
  12. when I built my closed sided shop, I did 2x4 walls and used 3.5 inch Tap-Cons to hold the bottom plate to the slab I also used gasket between the slab and wood, of Aluminum sheeting and roofing material for vapor barrier
  13. you have been a member here less than one month and you already read the over 70 THOUSAND POSTS in the knife section and are board already?
  14. we had an issue like that once, the result was blue flu the next day, problem resolved itself
  15. Best tends to be expensive, and rarely worth the extra cost, can you define what you meant?
  16. I got all the snow removed from in front of my house where I normally park. It cost me $22, money well spent, NOW the other neighbor decided to park there rather than clear her own parking area, I cant win
  17. I have to park in front of them now, I cant really park the Jeep on a 3ft snow pile, or the wife Chevy Cobalt
  18. we have 15 inches or so of snow on the ground from this weekends storm. there is no off street parking here, we all park on the side of the road. My neighbor hired a plow to clear the area in front of their house, as a result I have no place to park anymore because the plow piled their snow in front of my my house, leaving 3 foot of packed heavy snow were I normally park. Police Desk Sgt said there is nothing they can do to get it removed.
  19. You need to research 15% phosphor copper as a degasser. The phosphorus is a reducing agent (deoxidizer). This must be carefully measured so that enough oxygen is removed, yet a small amount remains to improve fluidity. In addition to phosphor copper, pure zinc should be added at the point at which skimming and temperature testing take place prior to pouring. This replaces the zinc lost by vaporization during melting and superheating. With these alloys, cover fluxes are seldom used. In some foundries in which combustion cannot be properly controlled, oxidizing fluxes are added during melting, followed by final deoxidation by phosphor copper.
  20. there is more to pouring brass than just heating it, also what you use to degas it? unless you like spongy copper sheet
  21. He is upset because we didnt tell him what he expected to hear, nothing anyone can do about that entitlement problem, he already decided its easy and we are holding out on him
  22. It seems to me you are the one full of himself, I answered you in my first sentence. There is a plethora of information posted here that you have not bothered to read, or try to help yourself any, and you then complain when we did answer you, Iron is not a starting point for casting, Aluminum is a much better starting point. which you would know if you took any time to educate yourself, you cant just jump in and cast iron, as John explained its not a skill that can be self taught, and its expensive learning curve. but have a good life, and I hope you dont kill anyone on your journey
