  1. Frosty, Was she self taught? We should check for skid marks on her back? SLAG
  2. Mr. Dragon, I think the British gas forge maker smith is "Iron Dwarf". He did mention, in one of his posts, that he was making them for fellows in southern England. I have not seen any recent posts from him in about two years. (I, also, vaguely remember that he may have changed his forum name in the last few years (4)? I miss the chap. Hope that helps, SLAG.
  3. Folks, I hate to be the bearer of bad news, But, about three days ago. the Canadian government extended the ban on cruise ships until 2022. Check out this news story, Ban on cruise ships until 2022 deals another blow to businesses relying on tourism | CBC News I tried to attach the u.r.l. to this post, But the "control C" function, for internet addresses, has stopped working on my system. Is anyone, else. having the same problem, too? Regards, SLAG. OOOPS! The url is working, now. Go figure.
  4. Mr. C., Yes it would be a good price here, in the central U.S.A. I suspect that is also a good price in Israel. (especially with delivery included). There is one proviso, that is that it burns hot and well. SLAG.
  5. Folks, A good tutorial for making those tongs can be accessed at BP001 Easy to make tongs The article is well illustrated with step by step instructions. SLAG.
  6. Mr. T.D., I suggest that you try acquiring basic knowledge and experience in how to hammer hot steel before trying to smith knives. The second suggestion is to smith knives with carbon steel, such as 1095 or 1084 before you try pattern welded steel. For basic blacksmithing in the Third World try Agricultural Engineering in Development: Basic Blacksmithing : a Training Manual - J. B. Stokes, Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations - Google Books Also hunt down the second book in the series. Both of these texts are a free download. But forget the third book because it is too specialized. Those books were developed for countries with few smithing resources. ABANA has a series of chapters on basic blacksmith techniques and how to move hot metal. Making tongs is NOT a good first project. fashion some simpler items before bighting too much for the first breakfast. Good luck with it. Expect to make many mistakes, then crude items before you get good results. We all started out with next to nothing skills and developed them with time, perseverance, and drive. But enjoy it along the way. Regards, SLAG p.s. check out bamsite.com/books for other books that are free. (after you read through the two books listed above).
  7. Mr. Frost, Yes of course!* It also helps the nail polisher person keep track of all the parts and their proper placement. I no longer get lost. My nail polish glows in the dark! Thank you for asking. Sincerity , SLAG. * citizens see immediately above for context.
  8. Mr. B.B., As regards to the Berretta M9. The slide has/ had a bad habit of breaking. The alloy used for the slide was defective. Which is just lovely when you need it big time. Regards, SLAG.
  9. Herr T.P., The SLAG suggests that you can help pay for your monthly electrical bill by smithing a few telephone poles per month. We suggest such poles have a rustic look, or a cowboy theme. Respectfully submitted, Herr , SCHLAG.
  10. JHCC, Has stated , "Nothing is foolproof to a sufficiently talented fool." SLAG says his quote is pure genius! This is not the first instance that he has displayed such genius. Keep them coming Citizen! SLAG.
  11. Bicycle chain is good, and automobile timing chain has worked for me for years. (it is heavier and more robust). SLAG.
  12. Mr. G.. You are most welcome, to the forum. Where are you located? SLAG.
  13. T. P., Cordless drill is a brilliant idea for use with a scissors jack. SLAG.
  14. JHCC, I do not want to spoil your upcoming adventure in fashioning a drill press rack and pinion adjuster. But would a large scissors jack mounted on a suitable stand be equally functional and a lot less work? But then again, you already have the rack and pinion part and it's essentially free. Happy adventures with your inventing. SLAG.
  15. The SLAG, wishes to add an idea to avoid repairing and reconstructing a mechanical device and have, for example, two or three screws, a spindle, and other small parts left over. I devised a cunning 'plan'. I take photographs of the device, as it is deconstructed, and often mark the small bits. (with, for example, various colored nail polises.). But you knew that already. The real dodge that I wish to disclose is to get a sheet of styrofoam, sketch the devices components on the surface, and press the screws et al. and small parts into the sketch. The parts stay in place and are "connected" to the sketched drawing, on the styrofoam. This idea may have been disclosed elsewhere, in the I.F.I. archives, but a little bid of repetition is not so bad. We hope that helps, Regards, from SLAG, Marg*, & Litzie**, * the Marvelous, ** our house felid
  16. Mr. M.J.L., Th Salvation Army has thrift throughout Canada. They are just like the Goodwill stores. The Roman Catholic Church runs similar stores. They are called Saint Vincent de Paul. They have many stores, in the U.S.A. and Canada. Google "thrift stores Canada" . and you may find other such enterprises. Good luck with your search, SLAG.
  17. Mr. Eventually, Welcome to the forum. Is the anvil in Halifax, Nova Scotia, or Halifax, England, U.K. ? And you are one thousand miles away? Where i wonder. SLAG
  18. Folks, Don't forget estate sales, if the thrift stores are not forthcoming. Regards, SLAG.
  19. Mr. Lampert, Try Goodwill for used spoons. They have boxes full of cutlery. SLAG.
  20. Mr. H S ..., Both respectful and creative at the same time. Good job. SLAG.
  21. Drill out then use a router or a Dremel or a Foredom or a die grinder to hog out the rest of the wood? Just sayyin' SLAG.
  22. NSP, Silver refining to separate lead from that silver has been done for millennia before the Romans. There is evidence of such activity that dates back to 3,000 to 4000 B.C.E. in Anatolia. The process is called cupellation. Base metals oxidize much more readily than base metals such as lead. (copper zinc etc.) and that allows for cuppellation. The mix (solution)?) is heated to a high temperature and air is blown into the mix. The lead is oxidized and gassed off leaving the silver behind. Scientists have found lead peaks in glaciers that correspond to the time of the Greek's activity while refining silver. SLAG.
  23. Mr. HWBX, I looked up 'mudlogger' for you, Bing says that it is, “Mudlogger” is the generic term used to describe the field specialists who monitor the well and also collect samples for the geologist. The career progression for a mudlogger is to generally start as a sample catcher while they learn about the drilling operations, then progress to a mudlogger and with further experience, become a data engineer. All that I do is to type in 'mudlogger' def. And Voila, SLAG.
