    The Monster

Wow! I don't know what else to say, but 'oooom-pressive'! Steve
  2. I expect the hole was a job-specific thing added by one of it's owners. In the table, it doesn't affect it's use for you. Congrats, you have a great anvil! Use it wisely, grasshopper. And have fun with it. Steve
  3. Kinda looks like what would be used to grind down RR track welds. How big is the beast? Steve
  4. I'd be rilly rilly tempted at that price. Steve
  5. My most regular visitor is Pumpkin, the orange tabby from next door. I encourage her to eat the mousies, and we're good buds. I also have bats in my belfry on a regular basis. My daughter was amused by a pair roosting on the ridge beam, and named them Vlad and Batty (That from an English major!). Groundhogs using the shed as a shortcut to the garden have a death wish and there are smears on the concrete floor to prove that. Steve
  6. You need to give her pictures of critical BS equipment- anvils, tongs, more cones, swage blocks, etc and tell her they are all on your most wanted list. Then let her do her thing. Congrats! I'll give you $75 for the cone---- OK- I'll make it $80! Steve
  7. Yo DM- another PA guy here, and I recommend highly the PABA group. We will have our next meeting in Oct in an awesome professional shop in Stroudsburg, PA. Always good demo,, and a great bunch of guys, all willing to talk and share what they know. (Kinda like IFI, but live and in person.) Have a look at the website- www.pabasite.org for info and details. Oh- I don't wear gloves when forging. Just for pruning roses and pulling poison ivy. Steve
  8. I wouldn't overthink this project- 1045 quenched and tempered to bronze on the face is how we did it in a hammer-making class with Nathan Robinson. You are only hitting hot steel with it, so you can keep things pretty simple. Steve
  9. Just out of curiosity, where is the camp down there? I have a friend who runs one right on Lake Nic. Steve
  10. The double horn will not let you down- it's a good size and a good mfg. Little spendy for me, though. For a little perspective, I have 4 anvils in my shop that combined didn't cost what the Pedd does, and mine run from 103 up to 270#. The mfgs are Hay Budden, Fisher and Peter Wright. It took a little time and gas to get them all, but in addition to getting the heavy iron, I met some interesting folk along the way. Nothing wrong with the Pedd, but with a little leg work you can put one or more of these old beauties back in service and more than likely have a story to go along with it. When I was picking up my 179# PW, I got a text from my wife that I had become a grandpaw. I call that anvil 'Shanna'. Steve
  11. Josh- sounds like all I need to do is follow your scrape marks south on 95 to the conference! See ya there. Steve
  12. Pretty much as basic as you can get- use the corner of a file and make a cut in both nipper ends to form a square hole, mebbee 3/8" or so, so you can hold 3/8 and 1/2" stock, both square and round No cutting and replacing rivets or even forging to get a usable set of tongs. You might need to soften the steel if it's too hard to file- get it hot to ~ a bright red, and just let it cool. Don't quench! Steve
  13. Nice work Doug. Looks like a good time was had by all. Steve
  14. I got their firepot clinker breaker and flange. I fabbed up my own elbow and bolted the whole mess together. The pot is cast iron, so welding is out of the question, unless you have welding skills. You will probably want to make some spacers to push the elbow away from the breaker. Improvise! Dat's the name of the game. That, and have fun. Steve
  15. I'm all registered to go. I didn't hear anything, and forgot which account the check was from, so I called the main office. They said I was all set, T-shirt size and everything. I kinda figured there would be some kind of pre-reg tent I check into, so I'm just going to wing it. I'm sleeping in my own bed at night and driving daily- not a big deal. Certainly would stick around if anyone wants to grab some dinner. I'll definitely check in with you, Josh. Steve I'm 20 min from Phila airport if anyone needs a ride
  16. If you don't have a torch, just use a flashlight! Steve
  17. I've always called it a machinest straight peen, but it's real handy as part of your blacksmith arsenal. If you're going to smith with it, you'll want to dress the face and the peen. Yeah, it would work better with a handle, too. Steve
  18. Looks like a hardie fuller, or a real abused hot cut. You can dress it for fuller use with a belt grinder or an abrasive flap wheel. Steve
  19. Sure looks like a HB to me. Maybe one of the later ones with carbon steel from the waist up? Steve
  20. Looks like you set him up pretty good, Doug. Steve
  21. #1 and #3 are also recently posted on CL Phila, by an IFI member who hasn't been around lately. It seems he's thinning the herd, as it were. They are both great looking anvils, but maybe a little spendy for the area. Either one will serve you well. You might want to consider your set up regarding these anvils- you won't want to be moving them in and out of the garage whenever you want to forge. Those beasts are heavy! All other considerations aside, those are anvils that will serve you, as well as your grandkids. If the money isn't an issue, jump on it. I didn't really comment on #2, that would work, too. Good size, plenty large enough for your needs, easy to shift around. Good luck. Steve
  22. Only $8 per pound? Slice me 10 lbs, off the top please. Extra thick. Steve
  23. I read the comments here before clicking on the video. I could only watch 1 min or less before the machining noise got to me like fingernails on a chalkboard. xxxxxxxxxx! There oughta be a law. Great comments on the vid, by those with a clue. Thanks, Thomas- might be too late for these clowns, but it might be an 'aha' moment for someone else. Steve
  24. As a certified horticulturist, I can say without a doubt that them be oak leaves. Very Nice! Steve
  25. Let's see if I got this picture thing figured out. On the 192- date photo, there seems to be a faint stamped 5 after the 2. I highlighted it with some chalk, but it doesn't show very well.
