  1. Gonna be hard to use that thing all sideways like that, remember gravity is your friend
  2. Fe- dude all that grinding gone to waste? (insert smiley face) We had a great time working on this anvil and we plan to do a couple more in the near future. Here are a few more pictures for those who like to see things We were able to get some nice sharp edges back on this anvil, next time I hope someone gets some 1/8 inch rod for the final passes the 3/16 rod is kinda hard to control I think that there would have been less grinding work.
  3. we will be out your way at the end of may maybe we can get together then we are flying into little rock and renting a car from there
  4. Canadian dollars? maybe hit too many 00000'S, maybe he bumped his head
  5. That is a bummer it does look like it would have been a nice hammer the eye looks well centered I think that just hardening the face of the hammer not the whole thing is the way to go chalk one up for experience
  6. wow that thing is huge please try to take pictures of the moving and post them here, I am sure some one on here can help you with regards to the foundation
  7. hey Brian I have a birthday comming up (insert smilley face) those are awesome
  8. I would have to say that is a friend indeed Brent does amazing work his tools are awesome
  9. I use these you can put them on and leave them on they have the uv protection and you can still see in low light conditions. This place has free shipping on orders over $50.00 they have other shades also http://www.ramweldingsupply.com/products-view.mcic?s=2953
  10. was the "spilling" done before or after the eating?
  11. We used to send packages to new york, my x had family there and no insurance= no package every time we would send something with out insurance it would disappear with out a trace
  12. I knew that was going to come up for debate so I added that bit on. Love the Viking Anvil I am sure we will dig up some more history lessons here, TP what do you have?
  13. I was watching a show last night about these guys that hunt for meteorites and they talked about this huge one that was used as an anvil and now presides in the smithsonian. I found this little article on it I am sure there is much more info out there but this seems interesting check it out http://www.meteorite...cted_TUCSON.HTM How Old Are Meteorites? If meteorites formed from dust from the early universe, then we would expect them to be very old. Indeed, this is what we find. Scientists have used radiometric dating to measure the ages of meteorites. The results show ages of around 4,500,000,000 years--about seven hundred million years older than the oldest rocks on Earth.
  14. ya square it up thanks Grant this supplier only had the material in plate bar stock would have been a better choice but this was about half the price so I went with it
  15. The die material came yesterday it looks pretty good nice and flat on 3 sides but one side looks like a banana, it has about a 3/16 inch crown I dont think that will be a problem, maybe tricky to clamp down for machining the dovetail..... hmmmm Fewood- maybe two extra cutters?
  16. seems like I have seen this forge somewhere before......... oh ya every time I go to the home page! Love the use of the metal studs btw they are commonly refered to as 3&5 studs if they are 3 5/8 wide, or 4'' if they are 4'' wide
  17. some great pictures thanks for the post
  18. this is probably a little late but I will throw it out there, go to goodwill and get some roller skates four wheels on each skate with bearings, I needed an idler for my belt sander and that's what I did it works great
  19. Picked up some goodies yesterday E.A. Chase closing shop sale it was like ants to a picnic, got a large rivet gun and about 20 chisels also 3 pair of OC tongs and a real cool cone that fits my hardy nicely Then there were the freebies
  20. Yes the groove is on the underside of the die, and I will check the sow block and tup for holes but I dont think there are any, so probably the dies were from another hammer thanks
  21. I just ordered a piece of 4140 to make some new dies for my commonsense powerhammer the dies that came with the hammer are quite useless for what I want to forge, I plan on making a set of combination dies, a fuller on one half and flat on the other side. The old dies have a groove on the bottom cut straight through; can any one tell me why this is there? It is about 3/4 inch wide and 1/2 inch deep. I will be having the dove tail machined in so it should not be a problem to add this groove if it is needed. here is a picture of it and a shot of the dovetail profile
  22. I have seen much worse anvils that actually looks pretty good I would just leave it as is. How are the edges? you do want a sharp edge on each side, but it only needs to be a couple of inches
  23. Nice work thanks for sharing, I am hoping to pick up an air gun today
  24. seems a little pricey to me but it does look sweet here is a link makes it eaiser for anyone that wants to drool http://cgi.ebay.com/Little-Giant-100-LB-Trip-Hammer-New-Style_W0QQitemZ250595081947QQcmdZViewItemQQptZLH_DefaultDomain_0?hash=item3a58a17edb
