  1. I soak my hammers in antifreeze I think Tom Clark first told me this, you do not want to leave them in there very long about 30 min to 1 hr it begins to wick up the handle if you leave it too long. It works well does not dry out fast, also be sure to keep it away from dogs they will try to drink the antifreeze very bad for them
  2. Brian Brazeal gives some really good info on math for scrolls in this thread on the second page he explains how c scrolls fit inside a circle its just math
  3. hey there Fe still got all yer fingers and toes? ya i am just figuring out this picasa it works good just took me some time to get familiar with it pretty easy once you get it the help option just confuses me but check it out its free. hows the hammer is it running now? I need to get going on mine gonna go look at one over by jackson gotta get a hold of that guy

Also testing picasa with this post still trying to figure it out
  5. Glad to hear you are ok that corner there you call the black hole may be time to clear it out. fork lift is alot better with the controll a little walk behind would be a good addition to your shop. I can take that monster off your hands maybe be safer that way.
  6. If you intend to get a job as a welder I would recommend going through some type of training there are many local colleges that offer some type of welding courses, it takes time to learn all the different processes (stick, tig, mig) and to make yourself employable may not be an easy venture. I spent a year going to school full time to learn pipe welding and got certified in stick, tig, mig as well as innershield wire I had multiple certs in all positions structural, aws D 1.1, asme pipe boiler and pressure vessels. I came out with really good certs but no experience in the field= no one wants to hire you and you have to take a job for $5.15/ an hour then you keep looking and get another job for $8.00/ hr then you start to have some shop time and after a couple of years you can find a better paying job. Your other option is join an apprentice program with a local union ( iron workers, boilermakers, piledrivers) that way you learn a trade and you will have a career with good pay and benefits either way it takes time join a union work your way through it and the guys that you work with will respect you for it. I am speaking from personal experience I now work as a journeyman carpenter doing mostly metal stud framing, and yes carpenters can weld also our scope is light gauge 1/4 inch and under
  7. Ah solid works gota find a copy of that I have been using auto cad v14 (stone age) but it works. good work on the new desing it will work out best for you
  8. Looks like you guys will be eating good, nothing that big out here in cali, only yard deer where I am located. Happy new year and happy hunting
  9. Great detail on your drawling, what did you use for the drafting? I would also recommend a tripod but keep the legs fairly straight up not too much angle 65 - 70 degrees is about right. the one inch plate is good and if you look at the pic of Hofi that Glenn sent you will notice the plate is cut out to the shape of the anvil this makes it open to pass a piece down the side without interference, its a little extra work but some day it will pay off
  10. I would also like to thank Glenn and Andrew for their hard work and everything they have put into this site and I will be ordering more shirts in the near future I am proud to be a member happy new year to all
  11. has not set their status

  12. very nice I like the size bet you can really get pulling with that and defend youself as well
  13. that's cool nice looking wheel. have you done this before? it loos like a time consuming job to make a wheel like that I wouldn't even know where to start do you have more pictures of the wheel making process?
  14. right on ironstein your wife seems real cool she got a kick out of the roller skate wheel that i used on my belt sander wish you guys could have stayed longer but it was too cold that day. I will forward my wish list to your wife
  15. looks like a white Christmas for you get out the shovel I feel for you guys out here in central ca it was almost 70 deg over the weekend had to stay hydrated with plenty of beer
  16. fewood-check your private message I am going to be in grass valley tomarrow maybe stop by if you are around gonna be a quick trip up and back one day
  17. I don't know why you couldn't reuse the spacers. what is wrong with the gears? I had a guy make a new shaft for my buffalo 200 it was completely locked up and the gear had rusted away this shaft had a helical gear on it, the guy charged me 30 bucks to make a new shaft which i know was a good deal I'm sure it took him a few hours to make, you need to find some one near by that will give you a "good guy price" but it can be done go to events with your local blacksmith group you may find another one for parts
  18. you did that in two heats right? (just kiding) but Tom did tell me that a nail should be done in two heats it didnt matter what size it was
  19. these things work great they drag a lot of junk out of the fire when I emptied my bucket there was 3 inches of crud in the bottom. also this protects your fire pot from too much water being dumped in and causing a crack in the fire pot Professor Habermann would cringe every time he would see a smith take a can of water and start dumping it about the fire
  20. nice work the horse heads look good I have been making bottle openers with them to give out as x-mas presents. you used a power hammer?
  21. you start your bbq with coals from your forge your clothesline is down wind from your forge you wake up at 4 am every morning thinking about your project
  22. there you go it aint broke it just lacks duct tape
  23. I saw a guy do repair work with 11018 lots of preheat get the whole anvil up to about 400 deg f. this guy said that he repaired anvils this way with good results, hardfacing rods are not recomended
  24. I have made a few of these horse heads they are getting better with practice I have made some bbq tools with the same 3/4 inch stock and some bottle openers that are flat using 1''x 1/4 stock. I learned this from Brian Brazeal I am attaching his sketch that shows the steps, half hammer face blows
