  1. Make nails, it is a good way to learn hammer control and how to use a hot cut, it teaches you how to control a taper. Making nails takes very little material and fuel and you will learn alot from doing it Making%20Nails1.doc
  2. Ok thanks for clearing that up, I digress. I came half way across the country and I saw at least 20 other CBA members there, and the people that did not attend missed out on a great opportunity
  3. The program was a bit timid as to be expected in the shape of things, and attendance was low I do not know what conference that you attended, but I was in Memphis for the Abana conference and I think that it was great, and the volunteers that put this together did an excellent job. Did you volunteer or donate anything to help out? Did you bump your head?
  4. Here are a few pictures that I got, i tried to get as many people together for a group shot but it was hard to find every one and get together at one time. Thanks to every one for taking time out for this, I really enjoyed meeting all ya-all and had some great conversations with every one that I was able to meet.
  5. Abana coference in memphis lots of anvils in tailgate area june 3-5
  6. I am not a big fan of trying to re-invent the wheel, if it works don't mess with it, I have a two burner forgemaster ( the burners are on top) and it works great, but I prefer to burn coal it gives more heat control
  7. Ok I will see you guys at the conference, I will be wearing my Iforgeiron shirt Maybe we can try to get together for a group photo and have some refreshments, tell a few stories, feel free to stop me and introduce yourself, I would like to meet ya-all face to face See you in Memphis
  8. Looks good, I have a hammer that Brian and I made and they are nice to work with, its going with me to the Abana conference. Nice work
  9. I have been watching a real cool anchor that is right around the corner from me for some time now, I asked the guy if he would sell it to me and he declined. I did get a good story out of the old timer, he found this anchor at the bottom of the Monterey Bay near Pacific Grove and he said they used this type of anchor to hold barges back in the sardine era when there were lots of canaries here. He was a scuba diver in the 1960's and found this anchor when diving, he used 55 gallon drums to bring it up, by floating them down then filling them with air (brilliant). This thing is at least 6 feet tall and 4 feet wide it is huge
  10. I believe what they are saying is that the 2010 electrode is good for unlimited passes, and the 1105 rod is used when you can do the repair in 3 passes or less ( it is not for unlimited passes) http://www.iforgeiron.com/topic/16052-what-do-you-think-of-this-anvil-repair-approach/ Here is a thread with more info on this, I did the welding on this anvil for Fe-wood it went well, although I would recommend using 1/8 diameter rod, unless you are doing some major build up the 3/16 rod is hard to control and get a nice flat bead (lots of grinding)
  11. Yes Fe-wood it is nice to have a water jet machine at your disposal, this jig would have taken weeks to build with out the machine. I finished welding the fist set of channels yesterday, they stayed pretty darn straight, a little bit of an upward pull at the end, but well within acceptable tolerance, went through almost 30 lbs of wire and two bottles of tri mix gas, ordering 10 more rolls of wire next week
  12. http://sfbay.craigslist.org/nby/tls/1747653306.html price slash only $3.57/ lb I love the part that in a better economy this anvil would be worth more money, I think I may start to cry now poor guy with all those anvils selling below fair market value, boy this is sad
  13. I finally started welding today I got the first pass done on both right and left side, I welded about 3 - 4 inches at a time moving down the piece and you could put your hand on it right after welding, I also peened the welds as per Mainley Bob's suggestion. The welding seems to be going well I went through a full bottle of tri mix in one day, that will add up quick and we only have three bottles in our rack. Here are some pictures of the progress I will finish the welding on the first two channels today and we will see how much distortion occurred
  14. Thanks ironstein, I am pleased with the way the fork came out and with the powerhammer I saved myself about 2- 3 hours of forging if I had to do that myself, just flip a switch and whacka, whacka, whacka
  15. Ok thanks I have a needle scaler I will try that, I do not want to ruin one of these things I know there is some serious money in each piece
  16. Oh a cheese press, you very well could be right, I was just guessing the person that I got it from knew nothing about it, the best info that I got from her was that she bought it from someone on the side of the road. There are no other parts, what is in the pictures is what I got, just the main tub thanks for the info
  17. I recently got this hammer running and made new dies for it and yesterday I made a bbq fork I had a horse head that I made out of 3/4 inch stock I tapered it down and split the end made a pretty nice fork. Then I decided to do some free form forging Hofi style to see what this hammer will do, it is a commonsense no 2 - 75 lb hammer. I took a piece of 5/8'' round stock and went to town on it, the hammer hits pretty hard, I need to redo the keeper for the upper die it keeps coming loose. The dies are combo dies that I made with the help of Fewood
  18. Nice clean build I would second the motion by Dange Dillon, make the table stronger that thing is gonna take a ton of abuse (well several tons of abuse) I am trying to sneak off to the flea market today see what I can find
  19. The next vise stand that I make will be like this http://www.iforgeiron.com/topic/16074-vice-and-stand/page__p__162714#entry162714 this is the one that I made using an old truck wheel a piece of pipe and a 2 foot square of 3/4 inch plate, you can move this with a hand truck and it is pretty heavy but still needs to be secured for heavy work or bending it will move
  20. I think there are some parts missing, I only got what is pictured, I may try putting it on craigslist and see what happens it would be nice to put in front of a winery
  21. I know that distotion is going to be an issue, I will be welding 3- 4 inches at a time and moving around to keep the pieces cool, I have a right and left jig so I can have two pieces to spread out my welding. I like your heat sink idea, but it is a little late to do that now I would have to totally rebuid the jig.
  22. I built the trolley so that it sits about 5 feet above the bench and the wire is in 30 lb spools, should be pretty easy to just jump on the the bench and change it out
