ausfire
Anyone seen a worse idea for tying down an anvil??

MC Hammer
Four nails would have taken less time. Yeah, this is interesting to say the least.
JHCC
Looks like someone thought the handling holes were for mounting, tried to make a bracket to suit, and then welded them down when they weren't doing the job. Understandable, but no less wrong.
ThomasPowers
In my mind I just designed a hold down using the handling holes that would have worked better than that and NOT used a welder!
Ridgewayforge
It also looks like the anvil is floating. Uneven stump, or is the anvil being held up by the straps?
JHCC
It's the anvil straining to break free!
RobS
It was probably modified after it broke... but you never know. People do weird things. "Rare antique Trenton clip horn anvil farriers knife makers 79 pounds collectible" Funny thing is I remember seeing this a few months ago. Oddly it is still there... Must not be rare enough. Al Stephens
Come on everybody! Several things came to mind when I saw this. Poor boys got poor ways. Necessity is the mother of invention. I can still make this work. Make a silk purse out of a sow's ear. Or one I've used, "Baby, It 's old and broke and needs a good home". Lets celebrate the ingenuity of keeping it somewhat useable. I would have flattened the broken edge and added a big spike to it myself. Al
SLAG
PVF AL, How about, "Necessity is the mother of consumption"? SLAG.
JHCC
SLAG: Necessity is the mother of invention; Invention is the mother of consumption. PVF Al: Compared to a couple of the "repaired" anvils njanvilman has in the Fisher & Norris Factory Museum, this one ain't nuttin'!
Glenn
The anvil handling holes could be used with hold fasts that were part of the stand. Insert the hold fast into the hole in the stand, into the handling hole and whack it with a hammer. Anvil secured, and can be easily moved when needed. SLAG
Mr. JHCC, Said in a post just above, "SLAG: Necessity is the mother of invention; Invention is the mother of consumption. " I had a deep dark feeling that I had it wrong. Thank you for your sage observation. SLAG. p.s. By consumption do you mean tuberculosis? Or the other consumption. JHCC
Perhaps “invention is the mother of consumerism” would have been more accurate.
