BIGGUNDOCTOR
Where to start......? Kind of like the pictures where you need to find what is wrong.
John McPherson
I have seen classes of knifemakers set a 30 gallon tank on fire by quenching too many blades in too short of an interval. It at least had wheels, a much lower center of gravity, and a fitted lid to extinguish the flames. Now, imagine dunking one hundred pounds of metal in 30 gallons of oil. Hilarity does not ensue. If they had knocked it over......
JHCC
Isn't the rule generally one gallon of quenchant per pound of steel being quenched?
John McPherson
Yes, plus the other safety precautions mentioned above. Only if you don't want a Darwin award. Some folks seem to be actively seeking one. Awarded posthumously.
Marc1
I think the obvious comment is ... why not just water?
Frosty
Let's see, besides the near complete lack of practical sense and safety he doesn't seem to know what critical temperature is or even means. Even given it was done in broad daylight the anvil was barely showing color on the horn I'd give it a generous temp of maybe 1,200f and no soak time. Do I have any confirming observations for my opinion? How about a maybe 25% rebound? I loved the guy shooting a full dry chemical extinguisher into an oil fire when a cookie sheet would've put it out. Another perfect example of what you need to be an expert on the internet, a video camera and a connection. I was really hoping they'd either boil or knock the tank over and torch the SUV. Seriously the video should have SOME redeeming value shouldn't it? Frosty The Lucky.
ianinsa
Frosty, are you sure that you're not just jealous of their display of" skill and artistry" ? besides that Anvil "looked good" and that's wot really count, ain't it ? What I find quite fascinating is somebody arrives in their car and parks it close to where a couple of palookas are mucking about with burning oil? Daswulf
All I could think was that I wanted to see a before rebound test. Over all the silliness, I don't think they did a thing to it. Other then ALL the dangerous stuff.
C-1ToolSteel
I missed the part where they dunk a red-hot anvil in motor oil.
stan
Yeah theres no way that anvil was at critical temperature and end result, I get more rebound from my rail track section.
swedefiddle
Merry Christmas!! They used two Fire Extinguishers, $50.00 x 2 to recharge. A piece of plywood or cookie sheet to smother the fire = Price-Less Luckily, no casualty. A lesson on what not to do when a video camera is alive!! the iron dwarf
too close to building and vehicles not enough oil anvil not to temp and no way to check temp used extinguishers that if pointed inside tank at an angle would blast flames back at the user had no plan in case tank was knocked over
Marc1
I agree with not enough oil. Disagree with distance to car ... should have been way closer!!!
