April 17, 201511 yr I finished my first hammer today. It is a cutler's hammer. It was made of 1 3/4 4140. I hardened about 2 inches of the face. The handle is made of Ash as that is what I had available. I soaked it for 2 days in boiled linseed oil. I have yet to hammer anything with it yet. I hope to have something hammered out by the end of the weekend.
April 18, 201511 yr Man that turned out nice. Maybe I'll have to put a few things on hold and get at a hammer or two.
April 28, 201511 yr "the proof of the hammer is in the hammering!" So how does it handle? ( I like my handles with terminal bulbs so I can have an easier grip. Ash, crab apple, osage orange will all work...)
April 29, 201511 yr Hi Thomas, any pictures on those terminal bulbs?Jshock , that sure came out nice!
April 29, 201511 yr Very nice work, hoss. I was a bit worried when I saw the first photo, thinking "Dude, you'd better ease the corners on that face." Then I saw the other photos. The scaley texture is absolutely gorgeous and really makes the hammer stand out in the crowd.
April 29, 201511 yr the end of the handle just bulges out a bit so it can't slid through your hand if you are using a light grip.
October 1, 201510 yr What a cool picture the new dog hammer with you dog in the background. Very nice work.
October 1, 201510 yr Looks great buddy! Can't wait to make my first hammerbut gotta teach the wife to swing a sledge first.
October 3, 201510 yr Nice looking hammer I'll be watching for your reports. I like the pic with Bella's eyes glowing in the background. Sinister looking like maybe she commissioned it or just keeps an eye on everything.Very cool.Frosty The Lucky
