  1. Blarg! The motor controller I have is pooped out with no useable control so now I have a unique motor I cannot use and nothing to replace it with!
  2. phew I would hate to do that much work at that point on my anvils, the ring there is deafening!
  3. My hope it to buy the base of another MUCH larger power hammer I found in a scrap yard, if I had to guess from memory it looks like the complete base of a little giant of 100# or more, die still in place, the spine that should have the rest of the hammer was broken off and no where to be found so I hope to get it for less than 200 just in scrap steel prices.
  4. OK! So no name that I have found on any part, no numbers either. Unloaded it this morning Ky stile, barefoot and shirtless and solo, also known as the stubborn stupid way. Worked it off the truck with a chain wench and four ratchet straps staggered for a slow release, set her down light as a feather After some sheet and bar rolling shes parked in a temp spot in the backyard next to the power closet so I can attempt to get a motor on her.
  5. I was kinda sad myself when I saw the last time the KBA website was updated or used at all lol I'm more of a solo artist but it would be nice to have something, I'm thinking we might be able to do a hookup with the Kentucky Horseshoeing School and rebuild a KBA of sorts or maybe something new. I built the facility for the shoeing school and its massive so now the only trick would be talking Mitch the owner into this idea Ill make some calls
  6. Welcome Tom,Where are ya? dont forget to add a location to your profile, people that might be close to you can be a big help!
  7. Just a quick note, muriatic acid can dilute with water, when I use it to remove large chunks of rust or to give a rapid patina I dump what I use into a 5gal bucket then hose the bucket, or use it to etch clean your driveway then hose again! As for other uses I have seen somewhere a dragon/snake designed with that pattern weld to use in an almost scale like shape. Bladesmithing just like horseshoeing or gate building or any other branch of smithing takes its time to grow and hone so I wouldnt say you're a poor bladesmith you just didn't practice enough yet heheh
  8. Man I dont know whats going on all the farrier setups going for such low prices but good for ya man, stand anvil and rasping vice good deal for 350 easy.
  9. ***Disclaimer*** This setup was only a test of the pot and flu in my shed, I do not advise any sane person to build a forge with wood! I repeat this was only a test and a wood frame is NOT a good idea. I just got my brand new 3/4" centaur coke pot the other day to use in my Old West Festival building but I just couldn't wait for the bricks and mortar to set so I built a five minute wood frame to hold the hearth. I use propane for my horseshoeing and had been messing around with the portable cavalry forge for other projects and not having a proper pot has been KILLING ME! I must say going back to a fire pot is like night and day, the amount of heat/speed/control I forgot I could have is astounding. For the first fire I shaped a 1/2"x1" draft shoe and for contrast a 1/8" forge welded ring I'm so happy to be working properly again! I know I could have setup a quick brake drum or 55forge but I gotta say the $300 for this 57lb pot was well worth it!
  10. Yea I been looking at some of his posts myself ( if that's the same one from craigs ) but I'm beyond broke, congrats.
  11. lol did they air hammer marbles? trying to figure out what a glass company did with this rig! neat buy
  12. Doing an Ohio show looking for any local supply that could save me from hauling up from Ky. Thanks in advance to any locals with the hookup!
  13. History channel had a great video of this type of saw blade work being done, I think it was an "How its Made" episode on saw blades Ill try to find a link later.
  14. Good score man! Love my Trent and its 60# lighter ;)
  15. Done a lot of contract work, every building I frame gets a penny with my birth year wedged between two studs, I do keep a half dollar with the same date on me, never thought to keep it under my anvil, sounds like a good tradition!
  16. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tahawus,_New_York some work was being done to the furnace but they talk like the rest has been removed for brush clearing.
  17. Its nifty thats for sure few bucks a pound to the right person I would say.
  18. Phew yea I have a Soderfors thats the same way, with added torch cuts >_< hated most work on this anvil, not all just most.
  19. Sorry if I have somehow offended you personally Eric but I don't think I made any blanket statement. I was very clear about this particular company and listed the name for that very reason. I understand people make mistakes but I took my problem to gentleman about the misrepresentation of the item before it came up for auction and not only did he deny the statements he made over the phone with me but continued to lie about the weight till he finally made the remark that "the weight of this item doesn't matter anyway" Again my intent was never to blemish your reputation or any other honest sales person, simply a buyer beware for this particular group. If anyone from that group is offended I suggest they buy a new scale and use it the next time they get an anvil, or better yet do as most other auctions do, if you don't know the weight just put "large" anvil then its my own fault for diving seven hours round trip. At this auction there were a few new-to-blacksmithing bidders, myself and Tony DeCaro (another blacksmith on these forums) came with me and had been chatting with them all day about some of the hammers that were up for auction and prices for some tools and the like trying to lend them a bit of advice from experience over the rumors they had been gathering. The big issue we were up against with this false weight of the anvil ( that they used a scale on..) was these poor guys that hear "buy the biggest anvil you can!" and "only pay xxx per lb!" So when they think hey! here is this 350# anvil I can pay up to 700 and still be at $2/# Great deal! it bothered us quite a bit when we know you can find a much better deal with a little time, much less a better anvil to learn your hammer control on... I know if I were to have purchased this anvil ten years ago and beat the face right off of it with missed blows, I would be kicking myself today for not just spending $60 at harbor freight to learn on the VW of anvils before I wrecked my Cadillac. I dunno man just my thoughts.
  20. Well thanks for the look-up I know more now than I did yesterday and thats a good thing.
