  1. I have an idea on this and will try to forge it out tonight, maybe pics tomorrow if able!
  2. About the blower, the way the gears are setup in most of them the fan shaft will can be pushed out or pulled in by the direction of rotation. On some blower models it will move so much that gear end of the shaft can pass into openings on the larger gears in the box and lock ( Seen this in some smaller buffalo models). This sounds like the issue on yours and when you turn in one direction the fan shaft extends / protracts slightly and can cause the blades to skim over the interior of the housing causing a clacking or grinding noise. I have corrected this in a number of blowers by observing the push/pull of the fan shaft while in rotation, with the fan exposed reset the set screw while the shaft is fully extended this way you figure what direction you blower wants to move, and by setting the fan all the way in and the shaft as far out as possible you wont get a shift and allow the blades to hit anything. If you hear anything after the reset look down the profile of the blades in movement and you should be able to see if any fan blades are out of alignment with the rest of the fan.
  3. Would like to see how some H13 would perform in these forms, I have seen and used H13 for fullers on horseshoes, and they tend to spend a good deal of time in contact with hot steel when working on a draft shoe.
  4. I think it looks good, as far as sparks and such I would go with a better coal or coke they wont shower you with sparks as much a low grade with high ash or charcoal. I personally dislike a well lit shop when I'm at the anvil, I want the best idea of what temp/color my heat is, do you have any other lighting options. I understand the brightness for woodwork and camera shots though!
  5. I like to take a fresh clean handle, remove the varnish, get my hand dirty and use it all day. By the end of the day where I hold my hammer will show and the more worn dirty areas are where I will sand and shape, its almost triangular once I do this a few times and will fit my hand like a glove I have a fairly long hand so I prefer thicker handles. You might also find in doing this you want different shapes on different areas, as most people will change grip depending on where they are holding the hammer at the time. Also after watching 50+ students go through horseshoeing school that the guys/galls that just accepted a smooth handle would get a blister or two and callus up quickly... The few that did vet wrap or tennis wrap handles would be ok till they had a long days work then they would re-blister every time! or on some occasions rip off a callus. With the wraps its not as easy to dry off the handle once it was saturated with sweat, but like most things this is all my observation and not fact lol
  6. wont be a problem once I get a longer belt and flat pulley, but for now I dont have the length/space to make an outside idler work. The other issue is working a proper treadle around the mass of welded I-beam, not sure how this was used all bodged up like it is but as soon as my current show ends and I have a few bucks to throw around its getting an overhaul!
  7. The 1/2hp did great yesterday for about an hour working leaf springs, one of my inlaws thinks he has a 3/4horse thats reversible hes going to try to find for me so thats even better. So far so good! Oh and speaking of leaf springs, they seem to travel ( rotate) a bit while Im working, only slide about .25 inch max but just to be safe going to put some pipe clamps in them just to make sure they stay put, how common is this?
  8. I like the wood idea, and by bore I was talking about the width of the pulley where the belt will lay as shown on pulley websites, so thats just a matter of stacking enough wood. The diameter I would put at about 4" to match the vbelt pulley thats in use atm. My only question is will the wood slot for the key hold up to the rotational torque? If I gather this correctly I have the idler in the correct position for my rotation as its inside the belt pulling out, leaving the motor pulling from hammer > motor > idler
  9. Well Aaron im jealous I didnt get to quadstate lol!
  10. with metal prices today I would scrap that box and buy a new vice with change to spare, I was going to pickup a brass barstock 3/8x3/4 22" long and they wanted $55.00 lol....
  11. I dont see any flat belt pulleys with a 2.5"+ bore size for my belt, any other sites you know of?
  12. yea most vfd's I see online are around the price of a new 2hp motor... I'm totally broke right now, negative actually. The plan is a used or cheap 1hp motor that I can reverse just gotta find one thanks though its good to have options!
  13. I think the clincher is the perpendicular dovetails, whats the year range on the Hillbert? more info! this is the 15lb in photo, Ill have to weigh mine tomorrow if I can find a scale http://books.google.com/books?id=rg4AAAAAMAAJ&pg=PA1367&lpg=PA1367&dq=Hilbert+-+Freiberg+hammer&source=bl&ots=jeHyzDRnBe&sig=gCJPjNgoZ4u9E6dgO_h7clA9gUo&hl=en&ei=8V6CToz9Ooe50QGe6KCUAQ&sa=X&oi=book_result&ct=result&resnum=1&ved=0CB0Q6AEwAA#v=onepage&q=Hilbert%20-%20Freiberg%20hammer&f=false
  14. Oh and I need a new top die badly, the thing is half the width of the lower and the shape is unpleasant, dressed the front and rear corners with the grinder so I dont get the severe chops in the work.
  15. Very close indeed! That would explain the clutch bar design for the idler. Right now I have a counter weight on the left where the treadle attachment should go... but because I'm not able to run an overhead belt I think this is my only option but good to know how it "should" be, thanks a bunch!
  16. well the first problem I see is that it runs better one direction than the other.. but this motor is not reversible.. so I gotta keep that in mind for the next one, if only my house had 3phase lol!
  17. might have better promise than my treasure hunt for the 1600# anvil that was in the Portsmouth coke plant on the river. After a few field trips to the site and talking to locals the walmart parking lot now resides where the anvil was. More than on person saw said hunk of steel there one day then the dozers moved in and flattened the area, few days later parking lot.... best of luck on your hunt!
  18. I love seeing these goliaths come back to live keep the updates coming
  19. Sorry Grant I posted the youtube vid in the other post, low rez youtube vid http://youtu.be/iGCzkcGe5QY were you hoping to embed? Phil, I hope your right it sounds/looks good too me but as its my first and only hammer I have no idea if it is correct, or how to figure out the correct power~
  20. heh I have plenty of magnets on her for a lot of my farrier punches and pritchels, as well as a ton of chain but the trenton rings like a bell anyway well maybe more like a gong!
  21. well I'm up for a trade for this dc motor if anyone has something I can use lol! looks like I need to wait till next week to find something usable~
  22. The seller remembered seeing this type of hammer in the old Henry Ford workshops in old tv stories, bolted to 16" posts up and down the line
