  1. Brilliant! thanks DD, now off to the store for some sacrificial nuts
  2. So I dont have a problem with rebuilding the arm but how the heck do I get this bolt out! Nothing to grip but the threads, I don't see any way get at.
  3. The ladies don't bother with swish there just after a kilt check! But I'm not a fan of forge work in my wool kilt, air flow or not its hot!
  4. One of the bonuses to working at renaissance shows, a LOT of bartering for goods ;)
  5. I tend not to use my chaps for general smithing and keep them mostly for my horse work. The one thing I do like is the extra padding when I'm upsetting into myself and brace the tongs on my thigh. The inside pockets are great for farrier work but are a rare modification for some reason, I like them because when your under the horse its leg is sitting right on the pocket so its hard to access your knives from the outside, also it keeps the hoof filings from filling the pockets.
  6. Its time like that where my lack of impulse control and outspokenness hurt peoples feelings.
  7. My fav from that article, the cup holder at the very end, LOL!
  8. I use a standard dewalt disk from lowes, for that project I would use about an 80 grit to start and 120 to soften but only cause Im picky.
  9. Arg! Mini shoes are the bane of my craft fair day lol! takes just about as much time and more work for the smaller piece and most people dont want to pay the same or more than the full size!
  10. I want some pics of that unload! lol but no pics of the shipping bill please!
  11. Maybe its because I'm a farrier and I have to use wheels to buff my hoof knives every day and I learned how to use them a bit more than most. Also I use a 30$ harbor freight buffer and if I apply too much pressure... it stops lol I still get proper rpm but if something snags mostly the buffer just slows or stops I dont think I've shot a knife into the floor in about two years lol
  12. Gas costs can have a wide range based on the forge and pressure used, as well as how you use it ie more welding heat = more gas expended. I cannot afford to use gas alone coal is MUCH cheaper for me personally. Also depends on region and availability~
  13. Several sites have a large list as does the sofa site I dont have the links handy but just google coal supplier with those two names and you should find it, sorry not trying to be lazy but he wife is calling!
  14. Well in my experience if you have access to coke use it! lol coke is so hard to come by in my area that coal is all that is affordable MOST of the time, learn it, but stick with coke!
  15. Most shoes that old are of a shape a lot of people dont like to use today and by that I mean they need to be reshaped more than current stamped shoes that are closer to the hoof design. Couldnt hurt to try and sell them though just not something I would look for as a farrier. But this is a general idea and I am only guessing at the shape not knowing what brand they are.
  16. Just a few ideas http://freshpics.blogspot.com/2009/07/animal-sculptures-made-from-horseshoes.html
  17. Most places in Ky you're business is only in violation if you slow or impede the flow of traffic in the residential zone or operate past quite hours and become a disturbance, why I forge from 10am to 5pm mostly.
  18. I'm not sure what horrible things have caused such caution with the wire wheels, I use mine every day, buffer mounted and grinder cup versions ( I do prefer the twisted cups for the grinder ) I can touch and brush against mine without gloves and it hardly does anything to my skin, I would fear a belt sander more than any wheel. Also the finish you get from taking a piece to the wheel hot can be very nice and scale wont stand for more than a second. Even for getting into hard to reach places I use them: Edit: I do keep my safety glasses on from the walk over from the anvil though I have only ever been hit in the legs with random slag~
  19. heheh Ill get my opinion in before the storm hits, I Ilike http://www.blksmth.com/Refflinghaus_Anvils.htm but have the same issue you do with no step. but I love the stile of http://www.fontaninianvilandtool.com/http___www.fontaninianvilandtool.com/Welcome.html My personal goal is to save the 15k or so and have my own cast.
  20. I like this design a lot! I wish I could afford to help you out and use this for a demo forge.
  21. I just wanted to see the draw for the fire, Im in the middle of a city and it was 5pm I tend not to forge after this time when people start getting home from work. Also the only local coal I have at the moment is block size (think basket ball or bigger ) so I didn't have anything broken down to use that was just a few pieces of wood and leftover coke. I didn't have the flue pipe attached so I only had about a 2' stack out the roof, should be much stronger once I add the missing 10'
  22. Used the info from anvilfire and here http://www.appaltree...oal/imag017.gif to go by. Looking back I should have made the area above the smoke shelf a little taller but it works great as is~ My stick welding is only half decent as is, but trying to work on 16gauge was a pain! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TUfjJ36fY3E
