  1. What type of forge, coal or propane? It sounds like you are not getting it hot enough.
  2. We won't remember that once leaving this post, hence the suggestion to edit your profile to show your location. Hopefully the seller didn't grind off too much of the hardened face of that anvil.
  3. I have found out it's useless to try and idiot proof something, due to there being so many innovative idiots out there.
  4. Welcome to IFI Edwin. Have you read this yet? READ THIS FIRST It will help in getting the best out of the forum. If you edit your profile you may be surprised how many members are near you and a lot of answers depend on knowing the location. I doubt if the original posters will respond since they haven't been on the forum in years. When treating any bone for knife handles, I don't recommend soaking in bleach or boiling them as it tends to make the bones brittle. To whiten them I use food grade 35% peroxide or better yet let them sit outside and let the sun along with ants do it. A friend of mine raises Bison for food and is an excellent knife maker, he uses the bones for handles and that is what he recommended.
  5. Yet we still don't know where in the world you are located.
  6. ThomasPowers has a post about making excellent anvils out of forklift forks. I'll see if I can find it. If I were you I'd go get em. Found em. https://www.iforgeiron.com/topic/43228-forklift-tine-anvil-need-ideas/ http://www.marco-borromei.com/fork.html
  7. Welcome to IFI... We won't remember this once leaving this post, hence the suggestion to edit your profile to show your location. You may be surprised how many members are near you if they knew where you are. I always suggest reading this to get the best out of the forum. READ THIS FIRST As far as a cheap and easy forge to build and learn on with a variety of solid fuels, the JABOD side draft is hard to beat. There are several sticky threads about them which should answer your questions.
  8. Our local TV channel ran a story tonight about how dogs have learned how to give us those "puppy eyes" to scam us out of what they want. It was an interesting story about their evolution and getting integrated into our pack. After watching it, I started paying attention to our new puppy Axle and sure enough he would give me the puppy eyes when he wanted something and so does the old dog Daisy and she also gets vocal.
  9. I still remember my first warning as a newbie. I copied and pasted a funny bit about how to deal with telemarketers. Next thing I know Glenn was on the horn with a warning about unacceptable naughty language it contained (which was edited out). Since that time I made sure if I copied & pasted anything it was proof read several times before hitting submit. It should be noted that cops, sailors & blacksmith's (all of which I was before retiring) are known for rather colorful language so warnings are very common.
  10. Edit and scroll down, should be the small picture icons hit the trash can on the first one. Yep that works too.
  11. When you download the picture, before hitting submit, double click the picture and a box opens up to allow you to resize. If you already posted edit within the 30 min window will also do it. I usually use 500X375. Yep, it's a Quikwerk made by Warren Tool Co.
  12. In the morning with not enough coffee, I have a hard time remembering my own name. Being married three times, I have to be really careful. Been married to my wife of 39 years, she understands but a slip up can have consequences.
  13. Have you read this yet? It will go a long way to helping you get the best out of the forum, like editing your profile to show your location and other tips. READ THIS FIRST
  14. It depends upon the age of the rebar. The rebar produced years ago in this country and grade is pretty consistent but the rebar imported in from China is a pig in a poke. IMHO
  15. Not sure about prices in your area. Around here if the screw & screw box are in good working condition that vise would sell for around $150 U.S. BTW this forum has members from all over the world and many of them have to depend upon dial up internet or pay additional for excessive band width. That is one reason the moderators are pretty stringent about trying to keep pictures and quotes to a minimum. Every member here can act as a moderator by clicking on the report post which will alert that something needs correcting. Are you interested in doing some Blacksmithing work? If so I would hang on to that vise, it looks like a good one.
  16. I'm going to take a stab at the ID. When researching another vise, I ran across the Warren Tool Co. from Ohio. They produced post vises under the Colombian label and for other retailers like Sears & Roebuck in the early 1900s. If you do a web search for the Warren Tool Co. there is a lot of info on the history of the company. Most of the links can't be included here due to TOS. An interesting one is from The Blade Forums. https://americanhistory.si.edu/collections/search/object/SILNMAHTL_27478
  17. Welcome to IFI. It would help to know where you are located and more pictures. Have you read this yet? READ THIS FIRST That will help you get the best out of the forum.
  18. Shouldn't that be FIF Frosty. In about every episode we see something that makes us cringe.
  19. Have you read this yet? READ THIS FIRST It will help you get the best out of the forum. You can buy most of the supplies through this forum. https://www.iforgeiron.com/forum/254-gas-forge-refractories-and-supplies/
  20. 1903 is what AIA says this number was produced, sorry Lisa but I guess your post slipped through the cracks somehow. How about telling us a little about yourself. Do you forge hot steel?
  21. Welcome to IFI. We won't remember this once leaving this post, hence the suggestion to edit your profile to show location. BTW this thread will help getting the best out of the forum. READ THIS FIRST Oh AIA says your anvil was made in 1907. She looks to be in very good condition too.
  22. No and if I tried to have google translate it, I may get a visit from the men in suits & dark glasses.
