  1. My first herb chopper today. Little cold shut at the handle but I think I can avoid that on my next one. This one turned out a bit small for my hands so next one will be 5 or 5.5” made from leaf spring.
  2. It works great and if it did puke out the 1.75 hp motor might be handy
  3. My uncle stopped by today and gave me an air compressor. Said his boss was going to throw it out cause it’s too loud
  4. I’ve heard the mesh can be used to protect fruit trees from the birds. Sounds like a pain though.
  5. I have no shortage of wire on the farm. Literally find it everywhere it seems. These are the first products I’ve painted and I think they look nice. It’s faster than waxing or oiling. Im happy to get some returns on my forging. I should get some more steak flippers done up before spring. May do some bottle openers today if I get a chance. Broke my Ladle yesterday so that will be first fix.
  6. Yes that’s how I been doing it once I realized what pain it was doing it on the bench. Plus it was too cold in the smithy for the paint to cure well. Hung some bailing wire in the well house and that was so much better! Paint cures nice and I can paint the whole thing with out touching them. Got 7 hanging in there now that should be ready for pick up today. Been rearranging the smithy this week. Was just getting too cramped. Hopefully today I can work in there and see if I like it better.
  7. Looking good. I’m envious of that gravel floor. I’m so sick of my dirt/mud floor. This spring it will have to change.
  8. I buy mine from a scrap yard for .30/ lb for most and long lengths or med- high carbon and SS are .35/lb.
  9. Would love to see the hardy holes TP. Handles look great. I love wood handles
  10. I was paying close attention to my hammer swings yesterday in the shop and noticed when I’m doing heavy forging I switch to the way mark aspery does with using my fingers to accelerate the hammer. Tried both methods and could move steel faster this way. But soon as I start doing lighter forging I switched back to hofi. I’d agree it depends on the work your doing as I do not swing my dead blow ( Bertha) the same way I forge.
  11. I have a chunk of rail you can have if you come this way. It’s not big but it worked till I found better. The little one I want to keep
  12. Welcome. I’m just north of Spokane. If you have any scrap yards nearby just go find a big solid chunk of steel and use that till you find an anvil.
  13. Dibble isn’t the name of what I was thinking of. Can’t think of it but for some reason my brain keeps thinking it starts with a P. I cant imagine a boat hook on a farm unless it was by the sea.
  14. Looks like a dibbing tool for planting seed to me. The socket end would be stomped in the soil. Then short rope was attached to the eye for tugging it up pointy end was handle and often a slight kick was applied before tugging it up
  15. By far my fav game meat! It’s illegal to bait bear in Washington so we don’t have many trash bears. Bears I hunt are all fattened up on berries. Whole family would tell you bear is our fav!
  16. Little more appropriate than the dead bear. Delicious by the way
  17. Absolutely I do. Easier to switch hands than move my whole body to get the right direction. Left hand has less power but good accuracy. I build retaining walls and paver patios mostly. No one can set base faster than me so I do it all while running the crew. We are one of the most recommended hardscape crews in Spokane
  18. I like the hofi method. I don’t feel I’m in good shape but can swing my 4lber all day with no troubles but my body is conditioned to swing a 4# deadblow hammer at work all day
  19. I sure like h13 for hot work! I would think it could take a decent weld as it fades to black heat from dark cherry. That’s the type of spring die I was taking about. What do you not like about it
  20. Sounds like a good time. Your learning quickly
  21. Or just some fuller dies for the power hammer
