My first forge was pop and sand long before I found this site. It worked ok but took forever to get to heat. Lasted about 2 months forging almost daily, was also a 20lbs tank. It will spall some and crack and flake. Wish we could get rid of those YouTube videos.
I don’t recommend you using the pop forge like I did as it was dangerous with the random spalling, shooting hot flakes of plaster out. Once I figured out how to make the charcoal forge I tossed that pop forge in the trash! Nice part of solid fuel forge is you can control just how much of the material gets hot. With gas forge your heating a larger section and if your bending something to square or loops after a few bends it won’t fit in the forge.
I would also recommend the jabod forge for what you need.
Least you didnt go with the perlite and sodium silicate forge on you tube. Works great till you get it up to forging temps and then begins to melt. And costs a lot more.
