  1. There are many burners that are simple enough to build even for a novice. The easiest I know of is the T burner. Instructions for such a burner can be found in the gas forge section.
  2. Thank you ,What's your day job
  3. Read the forges 101 thread. It's a long one but it will answer just about every question you could come up with
  4. For those of us that are not smithing for a living, what do you do to pay the bills? I'm a Hardscaper for the last 12 years doing mostly retaining walls and patios
  5. No I didn't think of that till after I was done but it doesn't move or wiggle. If it does then I will.
  6. I think it went well. Still needs dressed but I'm happy with it so far. We'll see how it passes the work test
  7. I'll do a practice round tonight if I get time. Thank you for the tips!
  8. @JHCC that is the type handle I plan to use. I have done that in the past but had trouble getting it tight on the punch tho I used an extra wrap around the punch which I think was causing too much friction and I couldn't get the slack out. Probably also the reason I tried something different this last time. Thanks for sharing that
  9. Well I got a chance to test the slitter. Don't like it one bit for tongs anyway. Should have punched the eye in-line and not 90degrees. Going to make a new one.
  10. Still working on a handled slitter to save my wrists from the heat while splitting the reins on my tongs. Punched the head and upsetting the handle in the eye. May try a wrapped handle on the next one if I don't like this one.
  11. You could be on to something there. Got my post vice mounted last weekend. Been a busy week for me at work. Doing the 2nd half of a 2600' paver job. So I haven't had time to play much. I did get a handled slitter started but ran out of propane right as I got the hole punched out
  12. Would be best to put your location in your profile. No one will remember it in a post
  13. Where are you located? May have a seasoned member right down the street from you. Need a little more info. What kind of burners? What jet size? If your not getting pressure from a direct hook up it has most likely triggered the safety valve. Did you hear a click when opening the valve? With out a regulator you should have way too much pressure! A pic or video would help a lot
  14. I'm no expert or curmudgeon but I will add to the above forward & reverse taper square to round and vice versa Proper scrolling would be a bonus repeatability
  15. Personally I would recommend a T burner. They are so simple a teen could make one and they work very well. Bought all the parts for less than $20, had 2 built in less than an hour. both work great with no tweeking other than gas pressure . The burner your doing sounds like a headache to me. Jmo
  16. They look pretty good David. Nicer than my last set. I would have drawn the reins out a little more but I'm no expert
  17. Really depends on how you pack it
  18. You need to ridgidize and seal the insulation with a good refractory cement and if desired an IR reflector like metirkotte or plistex or itc 100. Go to the gas forges section and read the forges 101 thread. Will save your lungs/ life and a lot of head ache! My my forge likes 13-15 psi best. Your results may very
  19. Thought this needed posted here my rigidizer recipe don't forget the few drops of food coloring for tracer "Jasen said "...used a cup of silica in a pint of water. Idk if it's proper amount but it worked very well on my forge." Incidental, is the most useful kind of information on this group. Thank you for posting; this will help loads of people
  20. I used a cup of silica in a pint of water. Idk if it's proper amount but it worked very well on my forge
  21. I say probably because I don't know his back ground or situation. it's possible some one he knows is a caster. Idk Anyway even a mild steel post would be better than cast iron (even IF he had the know how to cast) power hammers are great tools but if you don't know the basics of how steel moves under a hammer than the power hammer is just going to help you ruin steel much faster. Not trying to discourage you Ryan just making a point. If you haven't had time to finish the tongs when will you have time to build a power hammer? Have you ever heard the country song "too fast"?
