Budget Prebuilt Press
I just built one a few months ago there great tools its 24 ton but for skill set im a journeymen welder i'm not sayin you have to be one to build it but if your welding skill isn't there at those pressures you'll find out quick.Other than that there not hard to build and they save alot of arm work all my hydraulics are based off a a wood spliter except the cyl.Mine cost about 2400 to build but i live in Canada where prices are higher.Just for example its 65 bucks for 5lb of 7018 welding rod...

Pressing Forward........Thoughts???
I finally done the math on mine i'm just over 24 ton and its crushed everything i put thru in the last 8 months so with yours hittin the same tonnage it should be fast and strong which is what you want. One problem i had at first was cant like Jspool was talkin about i just welded in more reinforcement problem solved i think you should be fine you've got lots of reinforcement but its somthing to check right away and get corrected once you start squeezing. It can cause uneven wear quick in the movin parts. And one other thing you'll find out quick is if your freinds a good welder or not with 24 ton...Thought i'd finish with a little welder humor your welder bud should get a laugh out of it...

Modifying mini-press?
We go by cyl size here when we build thats why i asked so 4'' is good 5'' is gooder anyway it'll be a fun build to do i enjoyed building mine.

Modifying mini-press?
I like it if the price is right a 4'' stroke is fine see if you can get the controlls and pump from a log splitter it can't be hard to get a 5hp motor in the states used , dont quote me on the math but you should i think get it pushin 15/20 ton fast. What size is the cylinder its hard to tell in the pic.

Pressing Forward........Thoughts???
If thats for me it does banana a bit but a pass or 2 thru the flat die squares it up pretty quick i don't think a little play will hurt anything.IN my opinion when tolerances are too tight thats when things start happening like binding , welds deforming or worse..

Pressing Forward........Thoughts???
I rum combo dies on mine and they run from the center out where i use them is a off center hope this makes sense but they work fine

Pressing Forward........Thoughts???
Trial an error lol i never hooked one up yet I think a couple of springs would take care of that in the controll rods.Thats how im goin to do it i've seen a few set ups done that way.
-
Pressing Forward........Thoughts???
I got a 8'' work opening on mine with the dies in its more than enough also i have about 1/16'' play in the the travel its fine i like that guide plate ya got looks good.

It takes money to blacksmith !!!!
I got to agree it costs to get into it especially the part of Canada i;m in but we are lucky to have a master smith that does alot of teachin so its great to have that knowledge on hand.Books are also a great resource the last couple of years have been alot of fun heatin, beatin and repeatin workin steel on the anvil and buildin alot of custom gear...

24 ton design??? Input please
The steel is strong enough but i don't like the way your last drawing ''A'' looks ,to me its the weak link theres goin to be alot of side pressure or twist on 1/4 ''webbing I wouldn't trust it.Talk to an engineer like was said or a hydraulic mechanic they probably no more than an engineer anyway lol...

Hydraulic Forging Press
That is a nice press but he never did answer my ques on a price and makes me think its expensive so for guys with small shops i'd say its not practical. But eh i could be wrong and it is a nice build ...

Hydraulic Forging Press
Whats the lid,i would definatly go for 24t or more i kept my builds footprint small as well cause of space limit issues as well. You should take in ram speed as well as tonnage i think fast and strong is better than big and strong for a small shop.Thats my opinion you'll probally find lots of opinions out there lol .ALSO when you start doubling up and goin bigger so does the cost...

Hydraulic Forging Press
I didn't set a foot peddle up im betwix and between on doin it i like the hand lever, i had to buy all my hydrolics from a supplier ''gag'' anyway we just don't have the scrap yards up here like you guys do.I have 12'' of work space between the uprights and 8'' of travel if that helps. Will 2hp be enough i don't no everything i read said min 5hp its not a big deal, if it works great That plate you got is more than enough i wish i could get some cheap lol.The only real headache i had was the wheels stay away from made in china...i was moving the press and next thing ya know berrings everywhere.Oh and i was the guy doin the cursen Wayne was filmin lol

Hydraulic Forging Press
I do but there on the maritime blacksmiths facebook site my friend put them up anyway i got a new phone and i got to make a new video and pics. Its self contained and mobile 18'' wide 36'' long base 60'' high. Its got a 2 stage 5'' cyl 10'' stroke, 5hp motor ,its fast and it will squeeze lol. Were figuring between 26/30 ton i also used Randys book as a ruff guide it was good for making the the dies and mounts and alot of the differant dies that can be used. The hardest decision is which way to mount the ram this is the first one i done if you can weld use a square and a measuring tape there not hard to make. Also its made out of 1/4 '' x4'' square stock reinforced at the ram and base mount with 1'' plate and its all welded with 3 to 4 passes of 7018 stick. If ya got any ques just pm take a look on that site and see what ya think

HANS i gotta say i like that forge its makin me think on which way of building a coal forge.I was thinkin of building a fair size stationary forge but the size you built would give me alot of options of workin inside and out of the shop anyway i got a couple of weeks left in the house renos then i'll decide...
