  1. if you have nothing else to use, than rail road track is definitely worth the bit of time it takes to clean it up. if you already have a none cast-iron anvil that you are using than i wouldn't bother with it.
  2. as long as it is not galvanized, it should be fine to forge. likely A-36 like TP said. if not that it would be 1020 or 1018. they are all very similar.
  3. sparks are just part of the bargain with charcoal. you could decrease your air supply but that would also decrease your heat.

    so proud of me

not bad for a first go-round. the next ones you make, use half inch stock, as it will hold up a lot better. way to go.
  5. those lincoln welder will last a lifetime. my ac/dc buzzbox is 20+ years old and runs like new.
  6. i'm praying for you, brother. follow God and hold on to him, no matter what. no matter who let's you down, He won't.
  7. nice anvil. i rely need (want) a big shop anvil like that.
  8. star trek set aside, try puttin a bigger pulley on your motor, or a smaller one on your blower. or you could just get a normal hand-crank blower like the rest of us lazy none-creative people.
  9. i agree with daswulf on the champion #400. that was there flagship line of blowers. when you go to look at it, bring some chainsaw bar oil. if it makes any grinding sounds, try oiling it and seeing if it helps.it could just be that it is dry. after that, if it makes any other sound than a soft wurr, i wouldn't mess with it. like TP said, you don't want to get tangled up in gear replacement.
  10. definitely right. many folks mess there anvils up trying to 'fix' them, especially with a welder. use it as is, or if you rely want, you can oil it with some wd-40 to make it 'shiny'.
  11. from my experience with bamboo, i would think that it would split to easily to be of much good. how would you drive the wedge in to a hollow piece off wood, anyway?
  12. if you can post pics, we might be able to tell you at least how it was made and what it was made out of.
  13. from the pictures, i would say with a fair amount off certainty, that you have a Vulcan. that would make it cast iron with a steel face plate.
  14. jhcc is always right. do what he says and you will progress quickly.
  15. bbq forks, fire pokers, s-hooks, and wall hooks are all simple easy projects that don't take much steel. search 'blacksmith railroad spike projects' in your search engine and go to 'images'. there is a lot of cool ids there.
  16. very well said. London pattern anvils are nice, but not necessary. non cast-iron anvils are necessary. the in between? rr track, hydraulic pistons, tractor weights, and the list goes on.
