  1. Man that is some interesting timing. Just the other day i told my wife that if i died i wanted this to be done with my ashes. Interesting to see it in practice. Sorry for the loss of your friend though.
  2. I love what you have done here they look really great.
  3. That is a very cool project. Nice work
  4. Yep other side has a really big bowl an odd shape and a large flat cup. I also attached an image of the leaf swage stake i got from him while i was there.
  5. Alroghty everyone i habe acquired my new 60lb swage block. Thanks for all the advice and help.
  6. That is amazing! I couldnt bring myself to use it.
  7. You are awesome thanks for that advice, just saved me from a purchase of regret. John is the way to go. Thanks very much.
  8. Fate...she is a cruel mistress. It would have been great and i appreciate the thought.
  9. Thanks for the advice Neil, thats actually not the first time i have heard his name. Im currently waiting for a response from OABA about my application to sign up. In the mean time i have contacted him and hope to hear back soon.
  10. I know that shipping cost might seem crazy but honestly $88 is lower than any quotes I got. UPS quoted $105 USD and the estimate from the blacksmith depot of standard international shipping was $200 USD. I don’t know what the issue is but it seems like when they get to Canada they need to load the cargo onto horse and buggy and hire some guards to fend off all the highway men. Thanks for all of the alternate solutions though.
  11. Unfortunately i dont, shipping kills everything for me from the states, i wanted to order 100 rivets and the shipping quote was 36 bucks. Of course the dollar being super low right now doesn't help.
  12. Ok so I have been looking for a swage block for some time now and finally i have the money for one to boot. I found this guy selling 4 brand new fresh cast swage blocks and i want to get one but i just want to make sure its not something im going to regret down line like if i had purchased a cast iron anvil or something. He is asking $340 canadian which seems like a good deal to me. The add reads These swage blocks are new castings from a good grade of cast iron. Size: 12-1/4 x 7-1/2 x 3-1/2” thick. 65 lbs Swage Block Notes: You will have to do some light grinding on the swage block at the parting line. The as-cast edges need to be radius ground as well before use. The amount of grinding and polishing you do is your choice.
  13. Thanks man I appreciate the input, in the end I decided to go for a 1x42 belt grinder. The primary reason for that choice was simply that there is just a much larger range of belts available at any time from a local store. I can get belts from 40 grit to 1200 grit and even a leather belt. I have a 1/3 horse motor hooked up to it and it works great.
  14. Lol sorry to say but that one is already wrapped up and under the tree for christmas morning. Il try to take some pics of it before my dad takes it home.
  15. I have always enjoyed your videos and this one is no exception i would love to try this project out in the future. I look forward to more.
  16. I cleaned off the scale and rounded off the corners of the part that holds the horn so it wond dig in on scratch it when you take the horn out. Man does it look good with that scale taken off i hade no idea how much of a difference it made. I immediatley took every other project that i had left rough and took all the scale off. Thanks for all the tips.
  17. Yea that way it was soft enough i could bent all the petals to shape by hand.
  18. Good point. I use a propane forge. Its just 1 burner. The copper is 20 gauge thicknesses which I picked up from the metal supermarket. I drew the rose pattern onto the metal and drilled holes for the centers of each piece as well as the point where every leaf comes together at the middle. I cut them all out using tin snips and then took them to the belt sander to take off all the sharp edges. I used a 220 grit belt. Then I took them to the forge where I heated each piece until it was just starting to glow and I quenched straight into cold water. That’s when the black stuff appeared on the copper. The stem I forged to shape and tapered to a point at the bottom. The top I sanded flat and drilled a ¼” hole in it which I threaded so I could use a simple threaded bolt to hold all the petals tight to the stem.
  19. Another couple of christmas gifts. This was my first attempt at making these and im pretty happy with how they came out. My only issue is that when i took the pieces from the forge and quenched them into the water the copper turned black. It was a tough black that took alot of hand sanding to remove and even so there is still some there. Anyone have any tips for me on how to either avoid this happening or how to more easily remove this stuff.
  20. Wow man those look great. Way better thank my first attempts were.
  21. Thanks guys. Im pretty happy with it for my first attempt. I have never done that warm wax thing. Im going to have to give it a look on YouTube.
  22. So for Christmas one of the gifts somone asked for was a candle holder. I remembered seeing this style of candle holder in the video game skyrim so i decided to give one a go and see how it worked out. Initially i was going to do a full ring and then weld the legs on but tbh im awful at welding so i decided to try and do it all in one piece. Might give the metal a coat of matt black paint but haven't decided yet. Thoughts?
  23. Thanks for the help. I found a guy about an hour drive away from me on kijiji who was selling them. I didnt think to get his name. I did ask what materials he used for them and he said 1095 and 15n20
