  1. With a long enough handle, that would also make a great backscratcher.
  2. Flattening the bulging sides will lengthen out the eye a bit; drifting will complete the job.
  3. That's actually CMELTING. It would have been SMELTING if you had used an "S"-shaped mold.
  4. My assistant is on a diet, I don't eat sweets, the Classics Department faculty is all multi-lingual. I may just take them home and feed them to the teenager.
  5. I made a flatter a while back from a section of car axle upset and flattened in the portable hole. Came out horribly misshapen and asymmetrical, but the one time I've used it, it worked very well. In retrospect, I wish I'd put the time and effort into making a proper cold-cut hardy. I would have gotten a whole lot more use out of it.
  6. @Charles R. Stevens's photo-heavy comment that was up above has been split into its own pinned thread.
  7. I knew that if I just kept talking, someone who actually knows what they're talking about would eventually show up.
  8. The journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step!
  9. Check with shops that do automobile AC, perhaps? I don't know if they use a different kind of tank.
  10. For household vinegar (5% acetic acid), yes. If you get the extra-strong stuff ("horticultural" or "cleaning" vinegar, 20% or more), take extra precautions (gloves, etc). Vinegar + galvy = zinc acetate, which is also pretty benign.
  11. Update: after a few days of them not being on the job (because the building is actually in use as a meeting space, rehearsal hall, and concert venue -- amazing acoustics!), I finally got hold of one of the guys who not only gave me absolute free rein of the dumpster ("Anything that's in it is yours -- just leave the stuff outside alone"), but laughingly refused the doughnuts. Now I've got to figure out what to do with this box of quality baked goods.
  12. Welcome aboard! If you haven't already, please read this. It will give you a start on getting the most out of our community.
  13. I saw the best minds of my generation destroyed by blacksmithing, sweating hysterical filthy, dragging themselves to the charcoal forge at dawn looking for a welding heat, birch-headed hipsters burning for the ancient workmanly connection to the starry dynamo in the machinery of iron,...
  14. Go for it! More trouble than it's worth. Just grind slow, don't let it get too hot, and give it plenty of opportunity to cool. Since you have a couple of hammers to work on, do them in rotation. Grind on one until it starts to get hot, move to the next, repeat. Each one will have a chance to cool down and not overheat. Yes. Start a new thread in this section with a title like "Help me identify this hammer?"
  15. 6" dia. x 8" long would still be a great NSA (Non-Standard Anvil), if your JCB part hadn't been available. Might want to go back and nab it anyway.
  16. Always struck me as a Rocker.
  17. There's an interesting-looking set of videos on YouTube about an artistic collaboration between Albert Paley and Jesse James, where each will start a sculpture, and the other will finish it. Here's the first video of the series:
  18. A little Google-Fu tells me that it's spelled "Hobkote" and (to quote Hobson's website) has "5-8 micron in thickness and a specially formulated passivation. The Hobkote® coating performs with 33% more corrosion resistance than Zinc Plated product." More than that, I could not say.
  19. The other problem is that the work baskets of their two cherry pickers are resting on top of the dumpster. Can't get to what's underneath.
  20. Baby steps = good. Coil springs are good for punches and chisels and (eventually) tongs (which are not a beginner project). It's tougher to forge than mild steel, though, so you should probably seek out a source of mild for your decorative projects. See if there's a steel supplier or fabrication shop near you that will sell you their drops (offcuts) for cheap. Oh, and please add your location (Ontario?) to your profile.
  21. Went back and dug out a couple more pieces before it got dark. I'll see if I can get some more tomorrow.
