  1. Do they even have Home Depot in Germany?
  2. Out of curiosity, any reason you prefer "Philipeins" over "Philipeens"?
  3. Mentioned it in the original post, @Glenn! The current plan is to use a section of heavy-wall square tube with a thick plate welded on either end, with the space in the middle filled with lead. In other words, the steel provides the strength, and the lead provides the weight.
  4. Put the anvil where you need it, and put everything else on wheels. Failing that, a Johnson bar can come in pretty handy.
  5. "Go not to the elves for counsel, for they will say both yes and no."
  6. I'm saving lead to cast into the head of a treadle hammer, but that's a different project.
  7. I'm no bladesmith, but I just switched from horn-to-tongs to horn-to-hammer. It's easier to see what I'm doing when working over the horn.
  8. The burlap bag idea sounds about right. The "handles" would start out separated, and then would be linked together to keep them from opening up.
  9. Okay, hold the phone. George gave you the name and location of a supplier near you and offered his informed opinion about certain kinds of anvils (including a rather dramatic assessment of one brand he does not favor). That's scarcely being unhelpful. Let's not start making character judgements about each other -- a little politeness on all sides will make things go easier. Okay?
  10. I haven't yet decided on a stripping method*, but I am confident that it's safe (and legal!**) to dispose of the residue in the trash. *leaning towards a long soak in Simple Green. **at least in Ohio.
  11. Life has taught me many bitter lessons. Not the least is "Never read the comments on YouTube videos and news articles."
  12. The strapping is about 1-1/4" wide, so I figured something similar. I don't have a power hammer, but @Stitch wants me to come over to try out the one he just finished!
  13. He did have a couple of mis-hits one time, and I almost reported him to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Anvils!
  14. It was one of the "Man At Arms" videos on YouTube. The bit about the borax-and-water slurry starts at 2:23. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ALv580sAm2Y
  15. I stopped by the steel supplier this morning to get some 1/4" round and noticed a lot pieces of heavy pallet strapping lying around on the floor. Asked the nice lady in the office if I could have some, and she said "Oh, I'll PAY you to take them!" Unfortunately, she was only kidding, but I did walk out with a big handful for free. Now to find some bandsaw blades....
  16. Are you calling my son an animal?!?!? (I didn't know you'd met.)
  17. Not sure, but I'll be careful to rotate him a quarter of a turn each time.
  18. It was the original manufacturer's declaration of his intention not to live past 49.
