welcome llen, you have stumbled on a great resource, your right with how much information is on here, but dont let it intimidate you, just dive in, pick somewhere to start and explore from there. There are alot of great resources on here, lots of info in the blueprints from building your first coal or gas forge to proper anvil hieght, and projects to get started with. If you have any questions just use the search function at the top, if you still cant find the answer ask and someone (more like lots of someones) will be more than glad to stear you in the right direction, or answer your questions! Lot of friendly people on here, willing to pass on the knowledge they have acquired! Enjoy your new addiciton!
  3. I thought if it was on TV it had to be true! Even more so for movies, next your gonna tell me me that anyone can write and edit Wikipedia pages without necessarily having an idea what theyre talking about.
  4. scrolling them on edge must have been difficult, but it was well worth the effort, looks great! i also would have thought they were cut out, came out very symmetrical, great craftsmanship here.
  5. very nice last minute project! think you scored some points with that.
  6. you can certainly find new ways here, i find a couple everytime im on here
  7. now your catching on, you can never have to many anvils!!!
  8. I will be auctioning off my self to the highest Bidder, will cook clean, and maintain property, just need forge time, and 3 meals a day (you might be losing right there though, i do love to eat!)
  9. that looks like it will do the trick, if you use it on big stock or alot it may work it self down the hardy alittle bit but it will just make the shoulder a little more defined
  10. indeed, that was a goal when i got started, to eventually learn the skills to make whatever tool i wanted/needed instead of speeding the money on over priced specialty tools, as im sure alot of people on here got into it.
  11. i dont know how i feel about where this topic is heading!
  12. i was very bored riding around today with no ifi to keep my occupied!
  13. I dont know if it is particularly important, besides the fact that we are all keeping it from becoming a lost art, and passing along the skill, and showing the possibilities to on looker. It is a good thing, in that it teaches you to look at things with new light in more creative ways, to break from the box that we sometimes see things through, its about seeing a problem and finding creative solutions to achieve a goal, so in that it is an important skill, and the thought process can be taken to any area of life.
  14. Im with njanvilman, use it upside down, if it is more comfortable for you! no right or wrong way, just a right or left way, all personal preference, i usually set my anvil to the right or left of my forge, horn pointing to my left, making an L but then i can go to the far side of the anvil if i want to change directions for workin on the horn, but it makes no differnce if your comfortable working on it.

    diy vise

Nice vice! great ingenuity, i dont see many problems with as long as the welds are solid, maybe looking for a better screw, but your already on that idea. but well done, hope it works out well for you until you can upgrade, but it certainly get you going, im on the hunt for one once i have some cash in hand, hopefully before i break my bench vise!!!
  16. im with them, return it, explain why you did, and you appreciate the thought behind the present but it will not last very long as an anvil and hit some scrapyards/salvage yards and find yourself a nice hunk of steel to use, big sledge hammer heads, rr track, i beam on end with a thick plate welded on it, theres someone in the tailgating section selling a large peice of steel. all will work better and take muc more abuse, may just have to grind some blemishes every once in while or look into heat treating it, but even un treated steel will work better and last much longer.
  17. very nice work, love the joining work, simple but elegant, with a touch of technicality. Well done!
  18. it was like night and day goin from a peice of rr track to my brooks, do alot more work with alot less effort!
  19. get your self a good hand truck, can find em cheap, now i just need to take my own advice and stop breaking my back.
