Don't squish out the magic weld glue !! -
Good point Charles I do have a disk on my bench grinder so isn't to hard I have moded a couple engineers hammers into makeshift rounding hammers.
-
The face is flat no crown, but the edges are rolled off. Gonna test it out a bit before I grind any more off.

i got a couple projects in mind that will get us working together and work our strengths

Good trick for small stuff and hard to deal with peices. -
have one, those pics were after some rough grinding on the wheel, hit it with some 220 on a disk to clean it up a bit. no intended purpose, just wanted to try my hand at making a hammer, marcy now has a diagnal to use, were gonna tag team another and make a bigger one next. finishedish, not the best handle but it will due.

nope they shouldnt come apart, how many times did you try to weld it, did you flux everytime? looks like it was to cold to me, but im not an expert on the subject, but thinner stock cools quicker so it might have been hot when you pulled it out, but not when you went to actualy hammer on it. just a guess though -

nooo....i had to do it all by myself, while she was working on her heart...next time there will be some fullering to serperate the dies from the eye

I got ideas for the one, im gonna make marcy help me can't wait to try it out, i have to light the forge to treat it in the morning, so who knows what may happen.

So we fired up the forge today and i used a section of torsion bar to make a small hammer, ended up with a diagonal peen, trying out the hammer eye drift i made abit ago. To my surprise i actually punched the hole pretty strait and got both sides lined up very nicely, by far the best hole i have punched, have a bit more grinding to do in the morning before heat treating.

wow, this topic has become all about cookies, instead of sad irons, shame on you all, now its 8:15 in the morning, and i have no cookies after reading all this, how rude!

Questions about forge insulation
NickOHH replied to Hunter Ray's topic in Insulation and Refractories
I'm not expert in this area as I'm building my gasser now, but you are insulating it to keep heat in so the more(to an extent) insulation the better. I am just planing on using kaowool, and coating it with a kiln lining hardener such as itc100. Some people just throw the fiber blanket in there and light it up. I'm not sure about refactory but it would do the same as the itc100 in a way, reflect heat back away from the blanket towards the center. -
Awesome, neat idea!

No need for expensive strops or compounds , but you can get real fancy and use your leather belt.

Some people just don't appreciate a good joke anymore, going to the way side like the theater. I actually did a Theatrical preformance about puns, it was a play on words.

Looking to get a hold of an anvil
NickOHH replied to New axe maker's topic in Anvils, Swage Blocks, and Mandrels
you have to access then through the pages tab at the top not throught the links in the forum. -
All good advice , I would go to your local hardware store and get a cheap stone to practice with. After some practice I am getting great results with a $5 stone. Not suitable for a razor but a fine edge for a knife , with more time finishing it could be but why do that for a knife, first couple cuts threw something tough and the razor edge is back to being just sharp. It doesn't take anything fancy to get a good sharp knife edge , just patients and consistency of the angle.

Oh I'm sure there will be plenty of puns on the way ! Just let frosty shake off the icicles and he will chime in with some good(or is it bad ?) puns.
