  1. Here's a Christmas present I made for my father, I got kind of rushed at the end so I didn't get to finished the bolster like I would have liked. Bastard mill file blade, forged to shape and ground, old copper pipe spacer, and a two piece walnut handle sealed with Tru Oil. Thanks for looking, Happy Holidays!
  2. I did! Thank you, Mitch! I had a couple of pm's I didn't realize I had. I had forgotten to check those in a few months. Much appreciated, my friend!
  3. Sweet XXXXXXX, that's beautiful. Truly inspiring! Watch the language
  4. Hey folks, thanks for the compliments. The only thing I tried to put on the handle was boiled linseed oil, I apologize for improperly labeling that! Just didn't suck it up like hickory usually does... My flux was just good 'ol Borax. I sometimes get bad welds, but if I find them after grinding I just go back and re weld it, then clean it up again. And I'm pretty sure its A36, I can't remember if the mild my step dad always gets at the steel yard is hot rolled or cold rolled. One of those two, though! I did find that after I finished the hawk, my bevels on the bit were pretty steep, so next time I know to grind a flatter surface for a sharper edge and better sticking! Thanks!
  5. Here's my first mouse hawk attempt. started with 1 in x 1/4x 8 inch flat bar of mild, with a 5160 truck spring middle core for the edge and to give it a bit more material to widen the blade. Folded it around the mouse hawk drift from Kayne and Sons. Grabbed some of their handles from there, too. They're pretty nice, although they didn't want to take much of a stain (even after sanding!). It's only about 3.5inches or so from the back of the eye to the bit. Fun little things to make, I hope to make more!
  6. rhitee93, where in central/west Indiana are you from? This knife is beautiful!
  7. EduBacha, I've really enjoyed seeing where your knife making skills started from and have progressed to thus far. Awesome knife!
  8. Hey Mitch! Thanks for the kind words! I am using Kayne and Sons, but I'll definitely check Hawkins and Iron Mountain forge out! I actually had to strip the handle off of this and ended up carving a handle. Here's how it turned out finally. I'm shopping around for an ax eye drift so I can up my game a little bit. Any special recommendations for those?
  9. Thomas... is that "tanto" steel the same as HIGH CARBON rail road spike steel? *snickers*
  10. Looks good! I too like to leave some of the hammer marks and dings in my work! Gives it a cool, rustic, handmade look, I think!
  11. Have you been to Ryan Johnson's Tomahawk and Ax forging class at John C. Campbell? The whole weekend focuses on folded and wrapped eye style axes and hawks. It's an awesome class! Usually in August.
  12. Hey folks, This weekend I'm starting a project where I'll be working some wrought iron, specifically making a 3 layer blade that is a piece of 5160 between two pieces of wrought. I've asked around and done some googlin' and found that wrought needs to be worked pretty hot, like a yellow heat, and that when I have the three pieces together I need to have a thicker amount of wrought because it will movie easier than the 5160. Any other tips? From the research I've done on here, it know it will take a higher welding temperature for the wrought Iron, much like mild steel. Thanks!
  13. Super cool technique I've never seen or heard of before. Thanks for the awesome share!
  14. Man, I love that top one! Looks awesome! What kind of temper did you use?
  15. I'm doing a commission for someone. They want an ax they can use around the camp and out in the field hunting. I decided on a similar design to some of the "Trail Hawks" that folks are putting out there. A nice sized bit that can shave kindling, split small wood, and split some pelvic bones for game yet a hammer poll for stakes and such. I started on the beast from 7/8in square stock of hot rolled mild steel, with intentions of forge welding in a 5160 bit. After slitting and drifting the eye I realized... the hammer poll will from mild. For hammering stakes and such, what kind of longevity will mild have in that kind of use?
  16. That is awesome! Looks super cool.
  17. I was working on some projects yesterday, and I can't help but notice some of the stock I am using is shedding fire scale more than usual. There's quite a bit! When comparing hot rolled vs. cold rolled mild steel, does one produce more fire scale than the other? Thanks!
  18. Man that handle is awesome! Love the knotwork.
  19. By no means do I have as much experience as these folks, but I like to pre-curve my blade in the opposite direction. That way as I hammer my bevel it just straightens back out.
  20. I'll have to try that. Thanks, Mr. Powers! Thin as in like 16 ga. steel? I've got a bunch of that stuff.
  21. I kept thinking "I know I'm not great at forge welding... but I'm not THIS bad." I didn't take into effect the amount of chrome content. Thanks, Frosty. I'll find something else and hopefully they'll be cool with that.
