H13 is an air hardening steel when used for struck tools. Buy it annealed or anneal it yourself then forge the business end to the desired shape......clean it, grind it, when all done heat just the working end to nonmagnetic and let it air cool. The struck end will be annealed and the working end will be tempered, as it were. In use, do not quench, let air cool.

it is a scroll starting hammer, usually found only in a true Master's shop. It takes skill to start and hamer a scroll all at once.....

methinks Thomas needs to get with Rich Hale and keep them temps to themselves. I didn't bother to go to the shop today.....wind chills to -10 F......even I would say burrrrrr......

using water to dampen the coal on the forge serves to delay its burning while enhancing its ability to pack together while changing into coke. Water is not necessarily needed but slows the consumption of the fuel. It's okay not to use any water, but you'll probably use more coal otherwise. If you don't have any trouble obtaining coal, then you don't have to worry sbout it. It's not that big a deal.

I spent a couple hours in the forge making S hooks and half a squirrel cooker. Used the gas forge and had the woodstove fired up, and when I left the shop there was still a layer of frost on the flypress, second anvil, and most everything else metal that wasn't right at the forge or stove. We have wind chills below 0 degrees F.........glad I have an indoor shop :)

The flat belt on my LG 25 that I'm now using needs to be replaced. The belt is 2" wide and 53" long stapled closed as a loop. Does anyone have one to sell? Or, if you've done it before, what would you recommend as a replacement? Sources to get one would be nice, too.

rthibeau replied to Nick's topic in Solid Fuels: Coal, Coke, Charcoal, Wood, etc
Nick, how far are you from Traverse City?? Might be worthwhile to pickup coke/coal here. -
Yes, it does reflect gold, green, blue, and shades thereof, when held in bright sunlight. And it is a real good blade, already cut meself once with it..........

Switching from coal to charcoal
rthibeau replied to Nick's topic in Solid Fuels: Coal, Coke, Charcoal, Wood, etc
I recently switched from coal to coke made for blacksmiths. I like it a lot better and sold off most of my coal supply. I'm in Traverse City, MI, and I had one ton shipped in, shipping included = $709 -
Can anyone help me with the techniques to forge this?
rthibeau replied to Kifer's topic in Blacksmithing, General Discussion
to be a useable hairpin, scaled to that image, steel is not a good choice of material....nor is forging actually, it can be done faster and better with a belt sander and angle grinder with flap disk. But if she has an extraordinary amount of hair to pin......then it's a viable option.- 23 replies

also try speedy metals and Kelly Couples, google both for alloys, and Kelly sells knife specific metals.

How do you display your flowers/roses?

I used a piece of pipe and made a vase, then wrapped rebar with a forged leaf end around it to hold it upright. http://dancingfrogforge.com/Images/Bouquet2.JPG
