  1. How does one create an area on plain metal as a picture in a piece of damascus steel? I have seen examples of blades of patterned steel with a plain picture of an animal for example in.
  2. Well, here is update. I did not change anything since I last posted here and have used this hard. Probably made 20 billets. The fears of the railroad track bending at the neck are unfounded. There were many here that felt this would fail. Thought people would appreciate update. This is a small 15 layer billet I started today and worked through 4 heats.
  3. Here is my latest knife - Billet is 174 layers of 1095, 1084 and 15n20 - I also sandwiched 4 layers of 15n20 for the center. The billet has a raindrop pattern. Scales are oak with brass pins.
  4. I wanted to share a recent project that I have been working on, I have been trying to make a wolf's tooth pattern axe and this was my first attempt which was a disaster on the side of the pattern but it still turned out to be a nice axe. This axe was wrapped and welded with a body of mild steel and an edge of 1095 and 15n20 with a central core of 1084 giving the edge about 32 layers. The head is 8 1/4 inches long and the edge is a little over 6 inches, with the weight of the whole axe sitting at about 4 pounds. The handle is hickory and measures 35 1/2 inches long. All comments are welcome thanks for looking. Oh also I did take photos step by step on the forging of this axe head so if anyone is interested in seeing the process I can post that in a separate thread.
  5. Well, I am getting better with each knife. This billet started as 11 layers of 1095, 1084 and 15n20. Folded to total of 66 layers and did my best to create ladder pattern. Here is where I am at - I etched to see pattern and am happy so far. Needs further finishing, then will re-etch and do scales

  7. Hey Guys, yesterday I forged my first pattern welded billet out of a three layered bar I made previously. Basically just to practice firewelding and the technique of welding Damascus (or pattern welded steel in that case). It is very small and the knife itself is rather just for the decorative pattern and not heat treated or so. I welded the billet out of two layers of mild steel in which I clampwelded a piece of car spring. The holding bar I fixed with a faggot-weld to the billet. I used no welding machines... I forged 364 layers. A video of me welding the last fold you can see here: Here are some pictures (I etched the blade with boiling vinegar): If you have any advice for me for future projects I´d be glad to hear it. If you have a question I´d be glad to answer it. For now - kind regards - Daniel
